    Franklin Students, Families and supporters,

As you all know, we tragically lost one of our fellow Quakers, senior Ryan Dela Cruz '18, this past weekend as a result of a random fatal shooting. Ryan’s death, and the other senseless deaths before his, are adversely impacting our south end community deeply.

In the spirit of the Franklin mission, Ryan had enlisted in the Marine Corps to be part of something bigger than himself and serve his country. Like so many Franklin students, past and present, he dreamed of a life serving others.

We are all aware that fatal gun violence in the City of Seattle has a much higher incidence in our community. In recognition of Ryan’s life and dream, and in light of the statistics about fatal gun violence provided by KUOW, Franklin students have decided to redirect their efforts from their annual Campus Day, Quaker Day, celebration toward a Call to Action and Teach-in about the seriousness of gun violence, the need for greater safety in the south end, and 1st amendment rights as they relate to peaceful protest. These topics are central to the Franklin mission, “to graduate students who have achieved academic excellence and who look forward to sharing their expertise, understanding, and compassion to create an increasingly peaceful and productive society.
