    Indigenous People's Day October 9

    Superintendent Nyland has signed a resolution recognizing the contributions of native peoples and proclaiming Oct. 9, 2017 to be Indigenous People's Day.

    Indigenous People's Day promotes Native American culture and commemorates Native American history.

    In Washington state there are 29 federally recognized Native American tribes. Thousands of people in Seattle Public Schools, including students and staff, identify as Native American. Seattle was named for Chief Sealth of the Duwamish Tribe.
