    Welcome Back, Franklin Families!

    We hope that you have all found time to enjoy family and friends during this amazing Seattle summer! Enclosed in this packet you will find several pieces of information that will assist you in getting the school year off to a positive start!

    MANDATORY NINTH GRADE SUMMER BRIDGE: 9th grade scholars will report to the gymnasium for Orientation and Summer Bridge on Tuesday, September 4TH and Wednesday, September 5th at 8:45 a.m. on both days. Scholars will meet their 9th grade peers, work with upper-grades, and participate in Link Crew activities, tour the school, and meet ninth grade teachers and counselors. Scholars will gain strategies for being successful in 9th grade at FHS. Attendance is mandatory on these days. Ninth grade is a pivotal year for high-school success, and 9th grade specific activities will help students with their transition to high school. Parents and guardians are welcome to join us for a coffee hour on Tuesday, September 4th at 9:00am in the Auditorium.

    10th – 12th GRADE ORIENTATION: Orientation for 10th-12th grades will take place on Tuesday, September 4th from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm throughout the first and second floor of the main building. At this time, scholars will pick up their course schedules, check out lockers, purchase ASB activity stickers, apparel, and yearbooks.

    FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL:Wednesday, September 5th is first day of school. 9th Graders will report to the auditorium at 8:45am for part 2 of Orientation and Summer Bridge. 10-12th graders will report to school at 11:15am. Please see first week bell schedule included in this packet.

    SCHOOL PHOTO SCHEDULE:
    Student photos for yearbook and school IDs will be taken during Orientation on September 4th. Make-up photos and retakes will be done in late September and early October. Dates will be announced at a later date.

    STUDENT REGISTRATION/STUDENT SCHEDULES: A copy of course schedules will be available at orientation and on the first day of classes. If your scholar is missing a class, or has been placed in an incorrect class due to completed summer courses, we will work with your scholar to make necessary changes during the first week of school. We will provide an opportunity for scholars to make requests in writing at orientation and counselors will work to accommodate those requests during the first week of school. We may also be able to accommodate scholar requests to change elective courses on a space availability basis. THERE WILL BE NO FURTHER SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENT REQUESTS HONORED AFTER THE FIRST FULL WEEK OF SCHOOL. We thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation. A master schedule for a school our size can be very difficult to manage and everyone will not be able to get all of their first choices.

    FIRST WEEK OF CLASSES: Scholars will have an alternative bell schedule the first week of school. Please refer to the bell schedule document in this packet for more details.

    ADVISORY: We are excited to continue our work in advisories to enhance support for every scholar at FHS. Research shows that scholars have more successful experiences in school when they are connected to one positive adult mentor in the building. Each scholar will be assigned to an Advisory class that meets four times a week and earn a credit to focus on the following skills:

    • Building positive relationships and community with other scholars and staff in our building;
    • Learning skills to help scholars enhance their academic performance, monitor their own academic progress, increase social-emotional intelligence, and develop leadership skills; and,
    • Career and College exploration to develop their High School and Beyond Plan.
    • QTV, Recognition and Celebration

    STUDENT SUCCESS and the FRANKLIN HANDBOOK for SCHOLARS: As you know, your scholar’s success in high school is important as it opens so many doors for life beyond high school. All scholars will be issued the Franklin and Seattle School’s standards for success for academic performance, career and college readiness habits and behaviors. This packet contains important information about FHS expectations as well as a full school calendar. Please review the packet and sign the Student Covenant in order to ensure all of us are clear about Franklin’s expectations for excellence. Scholars who do not complete the covenant will not be able to participate in FHS field trips, extra-curricular activities or other activities that extend beyond the classroom. We ask that you assist in the education process in a few ways:

    1. Make sure your scholar attends every class every day, on time;
    2. Check in to see that your student is keeping up on class work;
    3. Make sure there is a quiet workspace at home where homework can be completed;
    4. Come to school events;
    5. Know your student’s friends!
    6. It is important that free and reduced lunch forms are turned in immediately! You can also complete this form online on the Seattle School District website.

    METRO/LIGHT RAIL TRANSPORTATION: All SPS students are eligible to receive an ORCA card. SPS is sending out an ORCA request form to every student. You must complete the form and return to school to receive your card. If the card is lost, it will be deactivated and a fee will be charged for a replacement. Replacement cards take time to reproduce. You will be responsible for transportation to and from school until the new card arrives. Take every precaution to ensure that you do not lose these cards! If you have questions regarding transportation, please contact Michele Warner at 206 252-6150 or the Transportation office at 252-0900.

    We are extremely excited about the start of this new school year. If we each do our part, Franklin will continue to be an anchor to our community and a stage for launching an amazing adult future! Let us do our best to keep our 107-year proud tradition alive!

    Enjoy your last few days of summer!

    Respectfully,

    Dr. Jennifer Wiley
    Principal, Franklin High School
