UW STEMsub – Our Mission

To help low-income and potential first-generation college students succeed in high school, get accepted to college and STEM majors, and graduate with a STEM degree.

Who Should Apply

Sophomores at Franklin who are:

  • Motivated to pursue degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM)
  • From a low-income family and/ or will be the first generation in their family to earn a four-year college degree
  • A U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident and not participating in any other Federal TRIO Programs (Upward Bound or TRIO Talent Search)

Students can apply online at or get an application from their counselor.

What We Do

Academic Year

  • Weekly academic advising
  • Science, math and writing tutoring
  • Saturday workshops at UW
  • High School graduation assistance
  • SAT/ACT test prep
  • College, scholarship, financial and application advising
  • Help with personal statements and application essays
  • Preparation for STEM majors
  • STEM Ambassadors program
  • Service learning hours
  • MakerSpace with 3D design and printing, Virtual Reality (VR), and drones
  • Free transportation and lunches

Summer Academy

  • Six weeks of classes at UW
  • STEM lectures by UW faculty
  • STEM Survival sections and labs
  • Independent research class
  • Classes covering:
    • Science, engineering, tech
    • Algebra, calculus, statistics
    • College prep and writing
    • Foreign language
  • Programming, robotics, 3D design and printing
  • Research and internship opportunities
  • Weekly STEM and college field trips
  • Lunch stipends and free transportation
