School Leader Update: Erik Weiss

Dear Franklin families and staff,

I am pleased to announce that Principal Erik Weiss has been selected as the interim principal of Franklin High School for the 2023-24 school year.

Principal Weiss will replace Principal Joseph Williams who is leaving Seattle Public Schools to pursue another professional opportunity.

Principal Weiss began his teaching career 20 years ago at Highline High School where he taught English and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) for 11 years. He served as assistant principal at Juanita High School in the Lake Washington School District. In 2018, Principal Weiss came to SPS where he has served as an assistant principal at Chief Sealth International High School.

Principal Weiss has lived in Seattle for more than 30 years. He earned his earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Washington and master’s in teaching from Western Washington University. Principal Weiss attended the UW Danforth Education Leadership Program where he earned his administrator’s certificate.

Principal Weiss and his family have lived in the Franklin community for almost 20 years and are proud to have three children who attend or attended John Muir Elementary, Washington Middle School, and Franklin High School.

SPS will begin the search for a permanent Franklin principal in the Spring 2023. At that time, SPS will share next steps with the community.  

I want to thank Principal Williams for his leadership and service to Franklin High School. Principal Weiss began serving as interim principal on July 31, 2023.
