April 30, 2023

Hello Franklin Families,

Welcome to the month of May, 2023! We have less than two months until the end of the 2022-23 school year!

FHS Safety Procedure Changes

Our Building Safety Team continues to enforce new procedures in the 23-24 school year to help improve safety on our campus. The team has been doing a trial run of these procedures, which will continue through the end of the year. Students have been asked for their lanyards and school identification when they ring to enter the building. Students have been very receptive to the process and many are used to showing their ID to enter the building! We will continue to encourage them to follow the procedures.

Safety Procedure Change #1: Wearing ID badges to help identify Franklin staff and students.
Expectations

  • All visitors are required to check in at the Main Office.
  • All teachers and students are required to wear their ID.

Safety Procedure Change #2: Different Colored Hall Passes by Floor to Help Mitigate Time Spent Out of Class
Expectations

  • There will be a different color hall pass for each floor. Students should only use the restroom on the floor where they have class.
  • If students are not on the floor they are supposed to be we will contact home.
  • Students inform their teacher (or other staff) know they are leaving the classroom before they leave
  • Go straight to their destination and then return to class when finished
  • Be gone for no longer than 10 minutes (unless it is an emergency)
  • Use the pass after the first 10 minutes of the class period have passed
  • Use the pass before the last 10 minutes of the class period
  • Do not disrupt students or staff members in other classrooms during class

FHS Prom Information
Sunday, June 4, 2023 5 – 9 p.m. at Within Sodo

FHS Quaker Forecast for April 24th – April 28th

Hello Franklin Families,

Power Justice Freedom is a legacy Franklin event, dating back to somewhere around 2009, where we inspire students to be involved in their community and the world more broadly.  However, unfortunately due to Covid-19, we have not been able to have this event the past two years. This year Franklin is bringing Power Justice Freedom back and the theme is empowerment! The workshops that we planning to do had to be cancelled because of some planning roadblocks, so we’re just doing an assembly now. The guest speaker, Annabel Quintero, will talk about persisting through hardship and trauma and fostering resilience. In her personal stories she talks about dance as her way of healing and wants to inspire students to find their personal ways of persisting through challenges. Visit Annabel Quintero’s website.

FHS Safety Procedure Changes

Our Building Safety Team is wanting to enforce new procedures in the 23-24 school year to help improve safety on our campus. In order to do this, the team wants to do a trial-run of these procedures through the remainder of the school year. Thank you for your continued honesty with feedback as we try to provide additional safety procedures for our students and staff.

March 27, 2023

Dear Franklin Families,

This afternoon at approximately 2:30 pm, a small fire was detected in one of the rooms in our building. Fortunately, the fire was quickly detected and extinguished. All students and staff are safe and were not in harm’s way during this incident. The Seattle Fire Department and SPS safety and security team were notified and quickly responded. The room where the fire occurred is a room that is used for meetings and is not a classroom. Because the smoke caused poor air quality, the building was evacuated. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. Students were dismissed at our standard time. However, students were not able to re-enter the building to gather their items. The room is being professionally cleaned by the district this evening.

Tomorrow morning (Tuesday) at 8:15 am, students should report to their 5th period class to retrieve their belongings, and then they should immediately report to their 2nd period class to start their day. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. The office number is 206-252-6150.

Sincerely,

Dr. Joseph Williams III
Principal

Washington and SPS policy on the need for Medication during School
“This is a reminder that Washington State Law forbids students from carrying any medication at school, over the counter (i.e., Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc..), or prescribed (i.e., Asthma inhaler, migraine medication), without submitting the necessary signed forms to the school nurse. These forms must be signed by the student’s parent/guardian and a health care provider licensed to prescribe medication in Washington State. Additionally, students carrying approved medications at school may only use the medication themselves. Students must never share medications with another student. These laws ensure the safety of all students and protect parents’ rights to determine their child’s medical treatment.  If your student needs to carry medication at school, you can access the form on the SPS Health Services Website. Please contact the School Nurse, Russ Palumbo, if you need assistance or have any questions. He can be reached by phone 206-252-6157, or by email at: rupalumbo@seattleschools.org.”

February 24, 2023

Dear Franklin Parents and Guardians:

I am providing an update to my previous letter regarding the report made to Franklin High administration about one of our staff. The safety, security, and well-being of our students is our number one priority and when professional standards are not met by staff, we have systems in place to minimize and respond to incidents. Our community is close and an incident such as this may increase parent and student concerns. We will continue to support all our families while maintaining confidentiality as required by the SPD investigation and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), however, we wanted to make you aware of the situation as soon as we were able.

Last week, we received a report that a staff member had been engaged in inappropriate conduct with a student. We take allegations of staff misconduct very seriously and immediately notified the Seattle Police Department (SPD), Seattle Public Schools (SPS) Human Resources, and Title IX Offices. As a result, the staff member was immediately put on leave and the SPD began an investigation. The staff member, Pawares Pathompornvivat, also known as Mr. Mac, was arrested, and charges have been filed. This remains an ongoing SPD investigation with which SPS is fully cooperating.  If you or your child has information about this case, please contact Detective Shannon Waldorf of the Seattle Police Department’s Special Assault Unit at 206-684-5575.

As we return from Mid-Winter Break, on Monday, February 27, 2023, additional social emotional, mental health, and support to restore relationships will be available to students and staff.  These supports along with maintaining consistency, predictability, and regular routines are most helpful for students as they move through difficult situations. The district has been in contact with our local experts, Harborview Abuse and Trauma Center (HATC) and King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, to let them know that our families may need their assistance. Please feel free to contact HATC at 206-744-1600 or Harborview Abuse & Trauma Center or King County Sexual Assault Resource Center at 888-998-6423  if you would like to discuss any general questions regarding this topic.

Please be assured that the safety, security, and well-being of your children remain our number one priority at Franklin High School. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Dr. Joseph Williams III
Principal

Dear Franklin Family,

Dear Franklin Family,

I would like to acknowledge that the Lunar New Year is a special time for many of our families. Unfortunately, the acts of violence that occurred at the celebrations in California left many devastated and heartbroken. I want to take a moment to acknowledge and recognize the impacts this tragic event has had on our Asian and Asian American communities. As Mr. Miyake mentioned in his e-mail to our staff, there are feelings of “…alarm, confusion, or even feelings of shame, embarrassment, or fear of further othering, etc.…” as a result of this event and other hate crimes towards the Asian and Asian American community.

I find myself specifically reflecting on our students, as the majority of our FHS student body identifies as Asian, Asian American, and/or Pacific Islander. Waiting until today, to mention about the Lunar New Year and the tragedy was an oversight on my part, and for that, I sincerely apologize. I wholeheartedly stand in solidarity with our AAPI students, staff, and families, which is why I will continue to reflect on my beliefs, biases, and actions to ensure an oversight such as this won’t happen again. Our FHS Leadership Team will work together with the district and other stakeholders to ensure our AAPI students, families, and staff have access to adequate and necessary support and resources. We are grateful and honored to be working alongside you all!

Dear Franklin High School Families,

Welcome to the second week of December 2022!

Dear Franklin Community,
I believe it would be helpful for our staff and families to know how the leadership team handles complaints from students and families. If we get a complaint from a student or family, more often than not, we will ask them if they have reached out to the teacher to resolve the problem. If they have not, then we will ask students and families to speak with staff members directly in order to resolve the concern. If the issue cannot be resolved between the staff member and the parent or student, then the admin team is happy to provide families with support to resolve the situation.

I want everyone to know that we are all on the same team. Please know that my door is always open to you, staff, students, and families. If you have questions or concerns about how we are doing, or how we can be better as a leadership team. If you have a concern, please stop by and we’re happy to discuss how we can continue to grow and improve.

In the best interest of students, staff, and the FHS community,
Dr. Joseph Williams III

A Note of Support and Acknowledgement

The terrible events that occurred in Colorado Springs leave our hearts deeply saddened. Numerous people have been injured, traumatized, or lost friends, family, and chosen family as a result of this horrendous crime. We recognize the brave individuals who intervened, as well. We stand with the LGBTQIA+ community in our school, the surrounding south-end community, and beyond. Hate has no place here at Franklin High School and will not be tolerated. We must commit to protecting, supporting, and maintaining safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ staff and students on campus. We believe all students should have their identities affirmed, feel safe and welcome, be their whole selves, and see themselves reflected in their experiences at FHS.

Thank You, Ms. Kelly (Head of School Safety @ FHS)!

Since starting at FHS in 2016, Ms. Kelly has made an incredible impact on our school community. Our FHS students would describe Ms. Kelly as, “that auntie that is always on your case but you know she’s got love for you.” Thank you, Ms. Kelly, for your years of protection and dedication to our students. You will be missed! Ms. Kelly’s last day at FHS is Dec. 2nd, and we wish her all the best in the next chapter of her life!

Have an amazing week!

Sincerely,

Dr. Williams

Art Quake Showcase
Congratulations to our Art department for the incredible work they are all doing with our students. Our community SHOWED UP for the showcase this past Wednesday. There were performances by the band and orchestra, improv team, and acting scenes from the upcoming show: Almost, Maine! Franklin has a rich history, rooted in creativity and the arts, and continued access to these creative outlets is important for all students!

Makeup Picture Day – Tuesday 11/22/22
Students who have not taken their picture yet will receive a pass on Monday during 3rd period that will identify when they will have their photo taken in the Auditorium on Tuesday. Running Start students have received an email with this same information. Students will need this pass in order to leave class to have their photo taken. Lastly, since students are receiving ID cards, the wait may be longer than photos taken in the past, and timing is not predictable.

A Note from Admin About Hall Passes
With guidance from the Safety Committee, SIT, security, and families, our leadership team will begin meeting with students and their families over the next few weeks to provide intervention around class attendance and engagement. After these family meetings, the leadership team will determine the next steps and communicate these steps with the necessary staff members. These family conversations may result in changes to what a student has access to the building, with the goal of increasing attendance in class and overall student engagement.

Dear Franklin High School Community,

We want to thank you for your communication and support this week. It has been a challenging time and we continue to keep all those who are a part of the Ingraham community in our hearts.

As some of you may have heard, there is a districtwide student walkout planned for 9:50 a.m. this morning related to gun violence prevention. The plans for this walkout have students proceeding to downtown Seattle and congregating at Seattle City Hall. I do want to note that while this is not a school or district-sponsored event, Franklin HS supports students exercising their rights to engage in political expression and civic engagement in a peaceful manner.

Should you and your student decide that this is something that your student will take part in, we ask for your assistance with attendance. As Washington state law requires that we maintain accurate attendance records, communication about your student’s attendance is important. To excuse your student’s absence, please have your student complete the attached Civic Engagement Activity Form to the attendance office Monday morning before the walkout. Related to the demands that this student walkout is promoting, please note that Franklin High School is actively in the process of hiring a social worker to join our team.

Respectfully,

Dr. Williams
Principal
Franklin High School

Message from Superintendent Jones
The Nov. 12 Update sent to families,

Superintendent Jones said: Gun violence is something no student, family, or educator should have to endure. Tragic events like this hit home especially hard. As a community, we can steer our students away from violence. We can teach our children the value of tolerance. In his comments at last week’s Seattle School Board meeting, Superintendent Jones introduced a safety initiative comprised of three elements: A district-wide safety and security audit Creation of a community action team Launch of a child well-being council Watch Superintendent Jones’ video message to learn more. As a reminder, our community has access to the SPS Safe Schools Hotline. You can use the SPS Safe Schools Hotline 206-252-0510 to report any threats to SPS schools. This phone number is managed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Dear Franklin HS Community,
Welcome to the month of November! Some of you may not know about the two young men and Franklin students that died this school year— Omar Abdulle (who would have been an 11th grader) in late August, just before school began and Liban Ahmed (who graduated from Franklin in June 2022) died just last weekend. There are no words that can do justice to the impact the loss of these two young men had on our students and staff. Although I was not able to personally meet these two young men, I have been told by both staff and students that these young men were respected, loved, and adored by many fellow students and faculty. I also want to acknowledge and apologize that recognition for Omar did not take place in September, during our first week of school. Going forward, I am committed to ensuring that we have a clear, consistent Franklin protocol for recognizing and acknowledging our students and staff when we experience a loss or tragic event.

Sincerely,
Dr. Williams
FHS Principal

“Coaching the Game of Life”
This week, the Seattle Medium published an article highlighting the importance of mentorship in our community. Franklin’s very own, Coach Craig Jackson, was proudly interviewed and featured! Although this article focuses on the impact coaching makes on our student-athletes -we believe the message applies beyond our athletics program. Relationships with students in the classroom and beyond class periods are proven to have a positive impact on how students view education, improve school attendance, help with interpersonal skills and reflect on lifestyle decisions. Let’s continue to focus on the whole student by building and maintaining relationships in meaningful ways. Congrats again to Coach Jackson on the newspaper feature!
