Apply Now to be a Team Read Tutor in the Fall

Team Read’s 2026–27 school year Reading Coach application is now open! Team Read Coaches are Seattle area teens who are trained to tutor elementary students in reading after school. A group of coaches go to nearby elementary schools to work one-on-one with 2nd & 3rd graders to help them become better readers and develop confidence in their skills. The pay rate is $21.30/hr.

20+ students from Franklin were employed with Team Read this year and made a real difference for elementary readers across South Seattle. 

The Commitment:

  • Two days a week from approximately ~4:15-5:45pm
  • Training occurs in the month of October
  • Work with a group of peer coaches in-person at a nearby SPS elementary school or community site

Art of Resistance and Resilience Seeking Muralists for Paid Work

The Art of Resistance and Resilience student organization is seeking to hire Franklin students to design and spray paint a big new mural on the cement wall that wraps around Franklin athletic field, with instructional support from local graffiti mural master Sire One. They are also looking to hire students with strong skills in portrait painting to repaint seven of the portraits of the Seattle Black Panther Party mural that were vandalized.

Pedalheads, a learn-to-ride bicycle day camp for ages 2-12, is currently hiring Bike Instructors to help run their 2025 spring break and summer programs. Their instructor positions are wonderful entry level jobs for youth to gain skills in relationship-building, teaching and leadership; and hours are also available as service-learning.

Pacific Science Center

Pacific Science Center has ignited curiosity for more than 60 years. Since its founding as the nation’s first science and technology center, PacSci has worked to expand access to science, serve as a vital resource for educators, and fuel discovery and experimentation as a vibrant community laboratory. They host a Camp for Young Minds each summer.

Science Center Camp Aide is a part-time role at 5 different locations across Seattle. The Camp Aide will ensure smooth camp programming by providing support to classroom educators and camp location site leads as directed. This position upholds the mission to provide safe, interactive, week-long STEM camps for school age children to spark lifelong curiosity, significantly enhance the participant’s experience and expand Pacific Science Center’s role as a driving force for informal science education.

Paid Internships

Seattle Department of Transportation offering paid summer training

SDOT’s Youth Transportation Ambassador program is a paid summer learning opportunity for high-school age youth to learn about jobs in transportation, the regional transit system, transportation equity, mobility justice, advocacy and more.

What will I do as a Youth Ambassador?  

  • Gain hands-on job shadowing and networking experience with a variety of people working in transportation; learn how varied the field of transportation is and hear directly from SDOT staff about their journeys to their current jobs. 
  • Have the opportunity to develop a variety of different skills related to transportation work such as service planning, transit agency coordination, etc. 
  • Be empowered to learn about and practice advocacy, mobility justice, and equity with a transportation lens.

SafeFutures offering $1200 stipend “internship” to prepare for your future career

Are you looking for an exciting and competitive summer program? SafeFutures has got you covered! Every year, they offer a six-week summer program that accepts 20 applicants, making it a highly sought-after opportunity.

During the program, you’ll become an “intern” and explore exciting new career pathways and skill sets that will give you an edge in your future career. You’ll get to learn through various exciting field trip options, guest speakers, and personal development opportunities, making it a truly immersive experience.

And the best part? Upon completion of the summer program, you’ll receive a stipend of $1,200 as a reward for your hard work!

To be eligible for this program: you must be between the ages of 14 and 18.

AIM Seattle is now accepting applications from individuals (ages 16+) who wish to learn more about disability, inclusion and advocacy to serve as paid interns at AIM’s arts camps for people with disabilities. Interns in this program are involved in one or more of our weekly classes by supporting group members, acting as a Lead for volunteers, assisting Teaching Artists and Support Staff, and assisting with set-up and clean-up before, during and after class. Interns will also determine their own learning goals and a special project to complete during their time in the program. 

Summer interns are expected to commit to a minimum of one week of summer camp (Monday through Thursday), with the option of interning for 1-2 additional camp weeks. Summer camp season begins mid-July through the end of August.

Denise Louie Education Center is launching a 7‑week summer program serving children ages 0–5 and are looking to host two additional Teaching Tomorrow interns.

Benefits include:

  • $20/hour pay
  • 30 hours per week in early learning classrooms
  • UW college credit

UW will arrange and cover the cost of everything, including:

Seattle Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) department maintains an Career Quest SPS Active directory of internships and other career-focused training programs that is updated throughout the year. The programs currently seeking students – and have open applications – are listed at the top. Programs that may not be accepting students now – but will in the future – are listed by CTE pathway below.

This is always the best place to start when looking for opportunities, but if you do not find something you like there, make an appointment with Mr. Ruiz to explore additional opportunities.


Worksite Learning (HS credit for work)

Students who are currently employed can earn high school credit (CTE or other elective credit) for completed working hours! Every 180 hours worked is equivalent to .5 high school elective credits plus an A to boost your GPA for college admissions.

Eligibility for students seeking elective credit for their paid work experience:

  • Student must be 16 years of age or older, be legally employed, and have taken a CTE course.
  • Complete Bi-Weekly check-in forms documenting your hours.
  • Complete a final evaluation form detailing how their specific work experience aligns with their educational goals, imparts work and financial understanding, and the ways this work experience impacts future career and educational opportunities.

College Prep, Fairs, and Info Sessions

Free College Advising for Low Income Students with Matriculate; great opportunity if you missed Upward Bound enrollment.

Become a High School Fellow with Matriculate, free college advising for low income, high potential students. Franklin students are encouraged to apply!

The college and financial aid process can be complicated! As a High School Fellow, you’ll have an Advising Fellow, someone from a similar background as you, walk you through every step of the process, 1:1, virtually, and for free. This includes creating a balanced college list, filling out applications, applying to financial aid and scholarships, preparing for college life, and more. All while cheering you on!

Matriculate also sends you “cheat sheet” guides, text reminders, a questions hotline, monthly newsletters, and you can access a Discord community.

The Matriculate Class of 2027 Application is now open! Apply today to get free 1:1 advising support. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until the class is filled. Spots can fill up fast, so apply now!

Scholarships and Financial Aid

The Port of Seattle Blacks In Government Scholarship applications now open until June 6.

The Port of Seattle Chapter of Blacks In Government is now accepting 2026 Scholarship Applications.

To Apply: Complete the Scholarship Application and include all the information outlined in the application. All applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. on June 08, 2026 .

Four scholarships (two high school & two college students) of $1,000 each will be awarded during a scholarship celebration ceremony which is TBD on the week of June 15–19.

  • Academic Achievements (Evelyn Findley Outstanding Academic Achievement Award)
  • Community Service (Lilyian Casswell-Isley Outstanding Community Service Award)

Applicants for the Scholarship must:

  • Have demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and superb academic achievement
  • Reside in one of the following counties: King, Snohomish, Kitsap, Pierce, Whatcom, or Skagit
  • Be a graduating high school student in 2026 or an enrolled college student in 2026
  • Have demonstrated involvement in community service
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale

Horatio Alger Career & Technical Scholarship Program

This year, 300 students will be awarded with CTE scholarships up to $2,500 to help fund their education. Funds may be used for tuition, childcare, transportation, equipment, supplies, or other related costs.

To apply for a scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Have completed high school (or equivalency) by July 1
  • Plan to attend a not-for-profit community college or trade/vocational school
  • Enroll in an associate’s degree, certificate, or diploma program by September that will lead to employment
  • Demonstrate financial need (applicants must show household income of $100,000 or less)
  • Be a United States citizen

Training and Mentorship Programs

Join a Hack Club, build your future and make connections for potential internships

Hack Club is a non-profit organization run by teenagers who want to spread the love of making and creating projects with a community. In addition, they host hackathons all over the world including satellite events, with hopefully one happening here at Franklin soon.

They also offer a paid summer internship for 9th-11th graders and a gap year internship with expenses all paid to help run programs.

This summer, Hack Club has partnered with NASA, GitHub and AMD to run a program called Stardance, where teens can create (art, software, hardware, games, etc.) personal projects, get it funded, and earn prizes for creating it. They will host local meetups, discussing or demoing projects with fellow high schoolers from many places of the city.

Applications now open for Girls Who Code Fall Pathways Program, Priority Deadline July 8

Girls Who Code is excited to offer Pathways this fall from Monday, October 19th, through Friday, December 4th! This seven-week program is a free, flexible online learning opportunity for students who want to learn coding at their own pace. You can read more about Pathways here!

  • Participants will be able to complete coursework in five tracks: Data Science + AI, Game Design, Web Development, Cybersecurity, and AI + Society.
  • While the program is fully virtual, students are able to attend virtual Partner Events with leading tech organizations. They can also connect with peers through Girls Who Code’s private Discord community and join optional Student Hours for live support and collaboration.
  • For students who participated in previous seasons of Pathways, this fall’s program gives you the chance to explore coursework you may have missed previously and join new virtual events!
  • Pathways is open to high school girls and non-binary students of all experience levels, including returning participants. Check out the eligibility criteria for more information.

Learn Arabic or Korean with OneWorld Now this summer

OneWorld Now is currently accepting applications for the Global Citizen Summer Language Program! In 4 weeks, students can earn a year’s worth of credit while learning Arabic or Korean.

This program runs from July 6-31 and will be held in Seattle’s Chinatown International District. The cost is $25, which includes field trips, cultural activities, leadership workshops, and daily lunches. 

Spaces are limited to ~15 students per class, and classes are filling up. Current 8-12th graders can learn more about OneWorld Now, Global Citizen Summer Language Program and apply.

Urban League Presents 2026 Summer University

Don’t miss this exciting, free summer opportunity for Seattle Public Schools! Summer University 2026, is a paid, in-person summer program running July 6–August 14, 2026, hosted daily from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. at Garfield High School. Students who successfully complete the program will earn a $600 stipend.

Summer University is designed to support high school students—particularly those exploring career pathways, leadership development, and postsecondary readiness—through the following learning tracks:

  • Entrepreneurship & Financial Literacy – Students develop business ideas, learn money management, saving, investing, and gain foundational knowledge of the stock market.
  • Branding & App Design – Participants build a real brand, design a logo, and prototype a mobile app using Figma, culminating in a pitch competition.
  • Peer Mentor & Mental Health Leadership – Students earn a certification while developing leadership skills and promoting positive mental health awareness in their schools and communities.

The program emphasizes hands-on learning, collaboration, leadership, and real-world skills, and is well suited for students who may benefit from structured summer engagement, career exposure, or leadership development.

Get free virtual, weekly training on how to become a barista and work in customer service! Students ages 15 to 21 are invited to join a weekly online class from 2:30-4:30 p.m. for 6 weeks of job readiness, customer service and self-empowerment training.

Participants receive:

  • A laptop to participate which they can keep after graduation
  • Skills to get jobs & references
  • Free food worker card
  • A small weekly stipend ($) for your continued participation

You are much more likely to get a barista job (which are not easy to get) if you take this training.

Summer Leadership Program for Asian American students

Summer Youth Leadership Program

The Summer Youth Leadership Program (SYLP) is a transformative three-week summer program that empowers Asian American high school youth to explore identity, build leadership skills, and deepen their connection to community, all while earning service-learning credit.

  • Eligibility: SYLP is open to high school students who have completed their freshman year and are entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year, or have just completed their senior year.
  • Location: Summit Sierra High School (1025 S King St, Seattle, WA 98104) in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District
  • Fee: $150

Outdoors for All seeking summer volunteers

Outdoors for All provides outdoor recreation experiences for youth and adults with disabilities, and their Summer Youth Camps (June–August) are a particularly great opportunity for high school students seeking meaningful service hours, leadership experience, and hands‑on community involvement.

Youth Camp Volunteer Highlights:

  • Support campers ages 7–17 with disabilities
  • Assist with outdoor activities such as community outings, cycling, kayaking, hiking, swimming, rock climbing
  • Camps run Monday–Friday, June 22–August 28
  • Locations include Magnuson Park (Seattle), Lake Sammamish State Park (Issaquah), and PenMet Park (Gig Harbor)

Students age 16–17 are encouraged to apply and may volunteer once approved through the online application and required phone screening.

Tutoring

If you are looking to build your resume with a volunteer job entry while also earning most or all of your service learning hours, you should consider volunteering with 425 Tutoring for students grades K-6 in all subjects (Math, English, etc.)!

Must be a current high school student to participate. (Must be at least 14 years old)

  • Develop individual lesson plans and activities using Google Slides, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Virtually tutor using Google Meets, Zoom, etc. (All Virtual)
  • Work with 2+ students per tutoring session
  • 2-4 service hours per week (1- 2 hours of direct tutoring, 1-2 preparation)
  • Must commit to 8 weeks of tutoring!
  • Flexible times! Works with your schedule

Qualifications:

  • Must use emailing services
  • US High School Student OR 8th grade student, fluent in English, good with kids, access to internet
