SYEP Earn and Learn Program Still Applications Open until Sept 27

The Seattle Youth Employment Program offers Career Foundations for those who are new to the workforce world and for those in need of key industry soft skills development to become competitive candidates for any position they apply for.

Participants identify professional interests, gain marketable skills, are exposed to various career fields, and build their social network. Students receive $325 stipends per quarter based on their participation during the school year.

• Receive support from an SYEP staff member throughout the program to develop skills and interact in small groups with peers.
• Gain practical tools to build your career portfolio (resume, cover letter, etc.).
• Participate in a total of fifteen workshops between October 21st to March 14th. Taught here at Franklin on Wednesdays after school.

Eligibility Requirements:

1. Age: Be between 16-24 years old at the start of
2. Address: Live within the Seattle city limits OR attend Seattle Public Schools OR a Seattle College (North, South, Central).
3. Household Income: Live in a household with income at or below 80% Area Median Income.

Team Read is hiring again for the 2024-25 School Year. Apply by Sept 22.

Team Read provides teens with a PAID opportunity to gain valuable work skills and the satisfaction of changing the lives of children in their community. The program supports second and third grade students who are not yet reading at grade level. Students are referred into the program by their classroom teacher, or other staff at their school, early in the academic year. They meet with their teen coaches after school two times per week, beginning in November through mid-May.

Seattle Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) department maintains an Career Quest SPS Active directory of internships and other career-focused training programs that is updated throughout the year. The programs currently seeking students – and have open applications – are listed at the top. Programs that may not be accepting students now – but will in the future – are listed by CTE pathway below.

This is always the best place to start when looking for opportunities, but if you do not find something you like there, make an appointment with Mr. Ruiz to explore additional opportunities.

Worksite Learning (HS credit for work)

Students who are currently employed can earn high school credit (CTE or other elective credit) for completed working hours! Every 180 hours worked is equivalent to .5 high school elective credits plus an A to boost your GPA for college admissions.

Eligibility for students seeking elective credit for their paid work experience:

• Student must be 16 years of age or older, be legally employed, and have taken a CTE course.
• Complete Bi-Weekly check-in forms documenting your hours.
• Complete a final evaluation form detailing how their specific work experience aligns with their educational goals, imparts work and financial understanding, and the ways this work experience impacts future career and educational opportunities.

If you are interested in learning more about these schools, you will need to register to attend the session at least 24 hours in advance. Follow the directions at the link to register through Naviance. A pass will be sent to your teacher for that period so that you can check in with them about missed work before reporting to the session.

UNCF Hosting its HBCU Fair at Garfield October 6

UNCF is hosting its annual Stepping Towards Success College and Career Fair with over 20 Colleges and Universities on Sunday, October 6th. This event is at Garfield High School this year from 9am – 3pm and is open 9th-12th grade students. 

Admission is free and panels, food, on-site admission, and activities will be available. Students are encouraged to RSVP prior to attending!

Seattle Promise (2 years Free Tuition) Application Now Open!

Seattle Promise is a college tuition and success program launched by Seattle Colleges, Seattle Public Schools, and the City of Seattle. It offers free tuition at any of the Seattle Colleges: North Seattle College, Seattle Central College or South Seattle College for up to two years, 90 college credits or a student’s first degree, whichever comes first.

All graduating seniors attending Seattle public high schools are eligible for the Seattle Promise program regardless of grade point average (GPA), income, ability, or country of birth. But you MUST APPLY to claim your free tuition. The application deadline is February 14.

Even if you are expecting to attend a 4-year university after high school, sometimes plans change, and you do not want to miss out on free tuition for 2 years. You cannot apply to Seattle Promise after February 16, so do it now even if it is a backup plan.

Training and Mentorship Programs

ACE Mentor Program Seeking Students Interested in Architecture and Construction

WHO:  Any student in 9-12 grade is eligible for the program

WHAT: ACE is a free after-school program where teams of students are paired with teams of professionals in architecture, construction, and building engineering to learn about career opportunities by designing a hands-on project together over the course of 15 sessions.

WHERE: Meetings are held in the offices of mentors in Seattle, Tacoma, or along the Eastside corridor. ACE is offering 8 teams in Seattle, 4 on the Eastside, 2 in Tacoma, and one fully virtual team.

WHEN:  The deadline for student registration is October 4th. Student/parent/mentor Kickoff events will be October 28 (Seattle), October 29 (Eastside), and October 30 (Tacoma). The 15 program sessions run every other week from November until May.

Aeronautical Pathways Program Seeking Applicants for Fall 2024

The Aeronautical Science Pathways program, hosted at The Museum of Flight is a free, skills center  program for high school juniors and seniors.    The program  introduces students to the following career pathways: professional pilot, unmanned aerial systems (drones), air traffic control, airline dispatch, and airline and airport management.  

• Juniors receive 3.0 CTE credits with equivalencies (1.0 lab science and .5 English Language Arts); Seniors receive 3.0 CTE credits   
• Both Juniors and Seniors are eligible for 30 college credits (each year); dual credits awarded by Green River College   
• Both Juniors and Seniors are eligible for The Museum of Flight flight-training and post-secondary scholarships (annual awards upwards of $250,000)   

The Museum of Flight hosts Museum of Flight monthly information sessions.  Students can register online via this Museum of Flight monthly information sessions student Inquiry Form. 

Youth In Focus Photography Class Registration Now Open

Youth in Focus is committed to making sure you have a place to be creative, heard, foster community, and connect with your peers. Check out our new classes below and sign up for one or more. Open to any teen between the ages of 13-19.

All Youth in Focus programs are free, and we provide free bus passes if needed. All supplies and equipment are provided. Your donation helps cover the cost of our amazing art educators, equipment, and program space. We are committed to equitable arts access for ALL youth.

Fall STEM Immersion Program Offered through Impact Internships

WHO: High School Students

WHAT: Health Science Immersion Program (H-SIP) high school students hear from health professional speakers as they learn about the academic, research and professional care settings of the health sciences field. In our Computer Science Immersion Program (C-SIP), students explore the changing world of technology as we hear from tech professionals and explore fields such as coding, web development, software and user design. In our Engineering Immersion Program (E-IP) we explore subjects such as chemical, civil and computer engineering. In our new Environmental Science Immersion program (E-SIP), students explore current environmental issues as we hear from working environmental professionals.

Fall Young Women Empowered Opportunities

Y-WE is excited to offer unique programming for the upcoming school year, free to attend for young women and gender expansive youth ages 13-19 in the Greater Seattle area. With programs centered on creative practices, nature-based activities, and affinity groups, we have something for everyone! All the currently enrolling programs take place in the evening at the Y-WE office (5623 Rainier Ave S).
