What: foundry10 and The Vera Project are starting a paid Artist Residency opportunity for young visual artists, ages 16-20! This program is a unique chance for youth to dive deeper into their creative practice, build artistic community, and show their work at a culminating show at the Vera Project’s gallery space.

Seattle Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) department maintains an Career Quest SPS Active directory of internships and other career-focused training programs that is updated throughout the year. The programs currently seeking students – and have open applications – are listed at the top. Programs that may not be accepting students now – but will in the future – are listed by CTE pathway below.

This is always the best place to start when looking for opportunities, but if you do not find something you like there, make an appointment with Mr. Ruiz to explore additional opportunities.

Students who are currently employed can earn high school credit (CTE or other elective credit) for completed working hours! Every 180 hours worked is equivalent to .5 high school elective credits plus an A to boost your GPA for college admissions.

Eligibility for students seeking elective credit for their paid work experience:

  • Student must be 16 years of age or older, be legally employed, and have taken a CTE course.
  • Complete Bi-Weekly check-in forms documenting your hours.
  • Complete a final evaluation form detailing how their specific work experience aligns with their educational goals, imparts work and financial understanding, and the ways this work experience impacts future career and educational opportunities.

UNCF Hosting its HBCU Fair at Garfield October 6

UNCF is hosting its annual Stepping Towards Success College and Career Fair with over 20 Colleges and Universities on Sunday, October 6th. This event is at Garfield High School this year from 9am – 3pm and is open 9th-12th grade students. 

Admission is free and panels, food, on-site admission, and activities will be available. Students are encouraged to RSVP prior to attending!

The BE Project Prepares students for an HBCU Future

The BE Project Promotes Black Excellence through tours of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) and workshops to help students prepare.

Current Offerings:

An Empowerment Series which include visits by recruiters from Langston University in Langston Oklahoma, Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View Texas, Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta Georgia, and Florida A&M University in Tallahassee Florida this Saturday (10/5/24), a Scholarship Workshop on Saturday October 12, 2024, and a Financial Literacy Workshop on November 16, with more topics to be added later. Tours:

The BE Project provides professional, organized, and memorable trips at an affordable price. Tour chaperones are experienced and dedicated to providing students a college preparatory experience.

There are still spots available on the East Coast tour, which will visit the following institutions In Virginia: Hampton University, Virginia State University, Norfolk State University and Virginia Union University, and in Washington D.C,: Howard University, The University of District of Columbia and Bowie State University.

The Southeast tour is currently full, and the program is pushing interested students to the East Coast tour; however they are compiling a “wait list” for student interested in just the Southeast tour. Email info@thebeprojects.com to be put on the waitlist.

Seattle Promise (2 years Free Tuition) Application Now Open!

Seattle Promise is a college tuition and success program launched by Seattle Colleges, Seattle Public Schools, and the City of Seattle. It offers free tuition at any of the Seattle Colleges: North Seattle CollegeSeattle Central College or South Seattle College for up to two years, 90 college credits or a student’s first degree, whichever comes first.

All graduating seniors attending Seattle public high schools are eligible for the Seattle Promise program regardless of grade point average (GPA), income, ability, or country of birth. But you MUST APPLY to claim your free tuition. The application deadline is February 14.

Even if you are expecting to attend a 4-year university after high school, sometimes plans change, and you do not want to miss out on free tuition for 2 years. You cannot apply to Seattle Promise after February 16, so do it now even if it is a backup plan.

Training and Mentorship Programs

ACE Mentor Program Seeking Students Interested in Architecture and Construction (applications due October 14).

WHO:  Any student in 9-12 grade is eligible for the program

WHAT: ACE is a free after-school program where teams of students are paired with teams of professionals in architecture, construction, and building engineering to learn about career opportunities by designing a hands-on project together over the course of 15 sessions.

WHERE: Meetings are held in the offices of mentors in Seattle, Tacoma, or along the Eastside corridor. ACE is offering 8 teams in Seattle, 4 on the Eastside, 2 in Tacoma, and one fully virtual team.

WHEN:  The deadline for student registration is October 14th. Student/parent/mentor Kickoff events will be October 28 (Seattle), October 29 (Eastside), and October 30 (Tacoma). The 15 program sessions run every other week from November until May.

If you are new to ACE, you will first need to create a new login.

UW Allen School Preview Day for those interested in Computer Science and Engineering (register by October 16)

Allen School Preview Day on October 18 is a one-day conference for high school seniors aiming to apply to the University of Washington’s Computer Science or Computer Engineering majors.  

Participants can expect to gain insights into studying Computer Science or Computer Engineering at the UW through an overview of their undergraduate program, admissions guidance including a personal statement workshop, building tours, and interactive student-led activities. This is a great way to get a head start on your journey in computing!

  • Location: UW’s Seattle campus, Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering (CSE1) Room 691 (Gates Commons)

Seattle Police Explorer Program Now Recruiting

The Seattle Police Law Enforcement Exploring program aims to bridge the gap between youth and police by educating and involving them in police operations and to interest them in Law Enforcement.

Besides gaining a working knowledge of police work, the participants have the opportunity to give of themselves to their community.

Who: Explorers is for young men and women 14 to 21 years of age with a grade point average of 2.5 or above

When: must attend 2 – 4 monthly meetings in succession.

Cost: Free

Fred Hutch: Veterinary Medicine and Pathology Workshop

Who: 9th – 12th

What: To promote awareness of veterinary medicine and veterinary pathology field among high school. Program structure:

  • Round table and one-on-one meet and greet with professionals from 8+ years veterinary medicine career paths
  • Annual Meeting tour and poster hall exhibition viewing

What: OneWorld Now! offers inclusive and accessible international education programming for high school students through accredited language and leadership classes.

Aeronautical Pathways Program Seeking Applicants for Fall 2024

The Aeronautical Science Pathways program, hosted at The Museum of Flight is a free,skills center  program for high school juniors and seniors.    The program  introduces students to the following career pathways: professional pilot, unmanned aerial systems (drones), air traffic control, airline dispatch, and airline and airport management.  

  • Juniors receive 3.0 CTE credits with equivalencies (1.0 lab science and .5 English Language Arts); Seniors receive 3.0 CTE credits   
  • Both Juniors and Seniors are eligible for 30 college credits (each year); dual credits awarded by Green River College   
  • Both Juniors and Seniors are eligible for The Museum of Flight flight-training and post-secondary scholarships(annual awards upwards of $250,000)   

The Museum of Flight hosts Museum of Flight monthly information sessions.  Students can register online via this Museum of Flight monthly information sessions student Inquiry Form.

Youth in Focus is committed to making sure you have a place to be creative, heard, foster community, and connect with your peers. Check out our new classes below and sign up for one or more. Open to any teen between the ages of 13-19.

All Youth in Focus programs are free, and we provide free bus passes if needed. All supplies and equipment are provided. Your donation helps cover the cost of our amazing art educators, equipment, and program space. We are committed to equitable arts access for ALL youth.

Y-WE is excited to offer unique programming for the upcoming school year, free to attend for young women and gender expansive youth ages 13-19 in the Greater Seattle area. With programs centered on creative practices, nature-based activities, and affinity groups, we have something for everyone! All the currently enrolling programs take place in the evening at the Y-WE office (5623 Rainier Ave S).

Service Learning and Community Programs

Local snowboarding program offers leadership service opportunity

Service Learning Credit available This organization will be at Franklin tabling outside of the Commons on Friday, October 4. Stop by to learn more and to sign up to be part of the Core Program.

Interested in getting service-learning credit while also learning how to snowboard and going on fun outings in the snow? the Service Board brings together a group of high school students and adult mentors from a diverse range of academic, racial, cultural and economic backgrounds to engage in their Core Program. Program participants meet twice weekly from beginning of winter through spring. Weekday workshops focus on engaging discussions encompassing a broad range of social justice topics. Weekend activities during Core Program – The Service Board rotate between intensive service-learning projects and snowboarding outings.

This year’s Core Program will be four months long, beginning in late January and ending in mid-May, meeting on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Music, snowballs, fresh food and a sense of community are the common threads that tie the Core Program together. tSB emphasizes the importance of youth voice, supportive community and promoting positive risk-taking to build youth leadership skills.

If you are interested in learning more check out the Service Board website and when ready, fill out their Core Program Application. The deadline to apply is December 6.

Tutoring Volunteers Sought: School Connect WA

School Connect WA provides after school literacy and math tutoring/programming for BIPOC and McKinney Vento children in Seattle Public Schools. Locally, they partner with the Deaborn Park International School in Beacon Hill to provide reading and math tutoring to 1st-5th graders. This opportunity would be an easy commute for any Franklin students who are interested in volunteering.
