Duwamish Valley Youth Corps PAID Training Program Now Accepting Applications

Duwamish Valley Youth Corps is a paid environmentally based job skills program for teens. Participants spend a significant amount of time outdoors in the South Park and Georgetown communities and natural areas learning about ecology and job skills. The program is equal parts environmental science, job skills training, stewardship and outdoor hands-on work. They seek a diverse group of teens to create a balanced team.

Pay: Up to $600 Stipend

Several Internships available through Boys and Girls Club YouthForce

From first job to dream job, YouthForce places teens in paid internships, coupled with college and career readiness training. Paired with the teamwork, leadership, and life skills youth need to realize their full potential, YouthForce participants are prepared to reach their professional goals for a successful future.

Students will develop job skills through internships at Mariners, Kraken, and Seahawks games. YouthForce’s partnerships with First and Goal Inc., Sodexo Live!, and Delaware North offer meaningful entry-level work experiences where students are supported by adult mentors, peer and professional networks, and on-the-job training.

Clean Energy Internships with Sphere Solar Energy

Get real-life experience and the skills to qualify for solar jobs (installation technician, electrician, design consultant, solar associate)

Seattle Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) department maintains an Career Quest SPS Active directory of internships and other career-focused training programs that is updated throughout the year. The programs currently seeking students – and have open applications – are listed at the top. This is always the best place to start when looking for opportunities, but if you do not find something you like there, make an appointment with Mr. Ruiz to explore additional opportunities.

Worksite Learning (HS credit for work)

Students who are currently employed can earn high school credit (CTE or other elective credit) for completed working hours! Every 180 hours worked is equivalent to .5 high school elective credits plus an A to boost your GPA for college admissions.

Eligibility for students seeking elective credit for their paid work experience:

• Student must be 16 years of age or older, be legally employed, and have taken a CTE course.
• Complete Bi-Weekly check-in forms documenting your hours.
• Complete a final evaluation form detailing how their specific work experience aligns with their educational goals, imparts work and financial understanding, and the ways this work experience impacts future career and educational opportunities.

The BE Project Prepares students for an HBCU Future

The BE Project Promotes Black Excellence through tours of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) and workshops to help students prepare.

Tours:

The BE Project provides professional, organized, and memorable trips at an affordable price. Tour chaperones are experienced and dedicated to providing students a college preparatory experience.

There are still spots available on the East Coast tour, which will visit the following institutions In Virginia: Hampton University, Virginia State University, Norfolk State University and Virginia Union University, and in Washington D.C,: Howard University, The University of District of Columbia and Bowie State University.

The Southeast tour is currently full, and the program is pushing interested students to the East Coast tour; however they are compiling a “wait list” for student interested in just the Southeast tour. Email info@thebeprojects.com to be put on the waitlist.

Interested in going to college to study STEM? Register Now for the UW STEM Expo 2024

UW STEM Pals welcomes high school students to join them to explore stem majors and careers on November 3 from 8:30am to 2:00pm at the UW Genome Sciences Building. The fair will exhibit UW STEM departments, student organizations, and research. It will also include informational sessions to help attendees navigate college decision-making and opportunities to explore STEM careers with STEM professionals.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

$16,000 scholarship available just for Franklin students, apply by January 31

Applications are open for a $16,000 local scholarship that is targeted specifically towards students at Franklin. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship (a sponsored activity of the Mount Baker Community Club) grants $4K per year and is renewable for 4 years of college ($16K total) – with options for 2-year programs (or 2-year to 4-year transfer pathways) as well.

The goal of this scholarship is to help deserving students achieve the dream of a higher education. The scholarship seeks out students who show financial need and academic promise, have overcome obstacles, and who contribute to their community. The scholarship is limited to students from ethnic or racial groups that are underrepresented in higher education. Check here to make sure if you are eligible before you apply.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship is administered by College Success Foundation. More information can be found on their website. Application Deadline: January 31, 2025.

If you are looking for scholarship opportunities to help you pay for tuition or other living expenses for college, now is the time to start looking through the Scholarship Bulletin to get a head start on applying.

Seattle Promise (2 years Free Tuition) Application Now Open!

Seattle Promise is a college tuition and success program launched by Seattle Colleges, Seattle Public Schools, and the City of Seattle. It offers free tuition at any of the Seattle Colleges: North Seattle College, Seattle Central College or South Seattle College for up to two years, 90 college credits or a student’s first degree, whichever comes first.

All graduating seniors attending Seattle public high schools are eligible for the Seattle Promise program regardless of grade point average (GPA), income, ability, or country of birth. But you MUST APPLY to claim your free tuition. The application deadline is February 14.

Even if you are expecting to attend a 4-year university after high school, sometimes plans change, and you do not want to miss out on free tuition for 2 years. You cannot apply to Seattle Promise after February 16, so do it now even if it is a backup plan.

Attend An Upcoming Financial Aid Completion Workshop

College Success Foundation will be leading a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) completion workshop at Seattle Library Central Branch (1000 4th Ave, Seattle, WA 98104) on November 6.

In order to participate and complete the FAFSA early, students and parent/guardians (contributors) must create FSAID account (studentaid.gov account) by October 25. This process may take 1-3 days.

• Date: November 6
• Time: 5:30PM-7:30PM
• Location: Seattle Library, Central Library in the Level 4 Computer Lab (1000 4th Ave, Seattle, WA 98104)
• Just drop in, no registration necessary

Reminders: bring your laptop as a back-up, make sure that you and your parent/guardian have created an FSAID  by October 25 so that you can participate!

Training and Mentorship Programs

Seattle Police Explorer Program Now Recruiting

The Seattle Police Law Enforcement Exploring program aims to bridge the gap between youth and police by educating and involving them in police operations and to interest them in Law Enforcement.

Besides gaining a working knowledge of police work, the participants have the opportunity to give of themselves to their community.

Who: Explorers is for young men and women 14 to 21 years of age with a grade point average of 2.5 or above

When: must attend 2 – 4 monthly meetings in succession.

Cost: Free

Fred Hutch: Veterinary Medicine and Pathology Workshop

Who: 9th – 12th

What: To promote awareness of veterinary medicine and veterinary pathology field among high school. Program structure:

• Annual Meeting tour and poster hall exhibition viewing

Aeronautical Pathways Program Seeking Applicants for Fall 2024

The Aeronautical Science Pathways program, hosted at The Museum of Flight is a free, skills center  program for high school juniors and seniors.    The program  introduces students to the following career pathways: professional pilot, unmanned aerial systems (drones), air traffic control, airline dispatch, and airline and airport management.  

• Juniors receive 3.0 CTE credits with equivalencies (1.0 lab science and .5 English Language Arts); Seniors receive 3.0 CTE credits   
• Both Juniors and Seniors are eligible for 30 college credits (each year); dual credits awarded by Green River College   
• Both Juniors and Seniors are eligible for The Museum of Flight flight-training and post-secondary scholarships (annual awards upwards of $250,000)   

The Museum of Flight hosts Museum of Flight monthly information sessions.  Students can register online via this Museum of Flight monthly information sessions student Inquiry Form. 

Youth In Focus Photography Class Registration Now Open

Youth in Focus is committed to making sure you have a place to be creative, heard, foster community, and connect with your peers. Check out our new classes below and sign up for one or more. Open to any teen between the ages of 13-19.

All Youth in Focus programs are free, and we provide free bus passes if needed. All supplies and equipment are provided. Your donation helps cover the cost of our amazing art educators, equipment, and program space. We are committed to equitable arts access for ALL youth.

Fall Young Women Empowered Opportunities

Y-WE is excited to offer unique programming for the upcoming school year, free to attend for young women and gender expansive youth ages 13-19 in the Greater Seattle area. With programs centered on creative practices, nature-based activities, and affinity groups, we have something for everyone! All the currently enrolling programs take place in the evening at the Y-WE office (5623 Rainier Ave S).

Service Learning and Community Programs

Local snowboarding program offers leadership service opportunity

Interested in getting service-learning credit while also learning how to snowboard and going on fun outings in the snow? the Service Board brings together a group of high school students and adult mentors from a diverse range of academic, racial, cultural and economic backgrounds to engage in their Core Program. Program participants meet twice weekly from beginning of winter through spring. Weekday workshops focus on engaging discussions encompassing a broad range of social justice topics. Weekend activities during Core Program – The Service Board rotate between intensive service-learning projects and snowboarding outings.

This year’s Core Program will be four months long, beginning in late January and ending in mid-May, meeting on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Music, snowballs, fresh food and a sense of community are the common threads that tie the Core Program together. tSB emphasizes the importance of youth voice, supportive community and promoting positive risk-taking to build youth leadership skills.

Tutoring Volunteers Sought: School Connect WA

School Connect WA provides after school literacy and math tutoring/programming for BIPOC and McKinney Vento children in Seattle Public Schools. Locally, they partner with the Deaborn Park International School in Beacon Hill to provide reading and math tutoring to 1st-5th graders. This opportunity would be an easy commute for any Franklin students who are interested in volunteering.
