Rainier Beach Youth Stewards Now Hiring for Spring and Summer
The Rainier Beach Youth Stewards program is currently accepting applications or the 2025 spring, summer, and fall seasons! RBYS is a youth employment program of Tilth Alliance for youth, ages 14-18, to gain job experience through wetland restoration, farm education, and community engagement.
Participants will work at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands and support with field maintenance, food distribution, and wetland restoration. Youth will participate in workshops that explore food access, civic engagement, and responsible land stewardship while building relationships with peers, adult staff, and volunteers. | SPRING March 11 – May 15. 6 hrs/week for 10 weeks. Pedalheads Seeking Camp Counselors for Spring Break and Summer Programs
Pedalheads, a learn-to-ride bicycle day camp for ages 2-12, is currently hiring Camp Counselors to help run their 2025 spring break and summer programs. Their camp counselor positions are wonderful entry level jobs for youth to gain skills in relationship-building, teaching and leadership; and hours are also available as service-learning (you can do 40 hours of service-learning over Spring Break and then get paid throughout the Summer).

Paid Internships
Paid Early Learning Internship Now Available through UW College of Education, Deadline extended to January 31
Teaching Tomorrow provides high school students with hands-on experience in early learning classrooms within Seattle Preschool Programs. The opportunity is a paid internship, and the program provides mentorship by UW staff and faculty, allowing interns to build career skills and gain professional experience in the field of education. Academic advising is also provided to all interns to guide students toward equitable pathways, including Seattle Promise and UW’s transfer pathways including a 4-year Early Learning Equity scholarship for first generation and BIPOC students!
Teaching Tomorrow is seeking 15 students who will intern after school hours and during this summer at the Denise Louie Education Center in Beacon Hill. Students earn $20/hour and can work up to 275 hours during this 8-month internship! Sophomores, juniors, or seniors who identify as Black, Indigenous, or other marginalized groups, including undocumented students, are highly encouraged to apply in an effort to advance racial equity and diversity the ECE workforce.

KEXP’s internships provide opportunities for emerging leaders from historically under-invited and under-served communities to get hands-on experience in a variety of fields. This year, KEXP is offering positions in Audio Production, Design & Marketing, Latin American Content, and Library & Archives. The 2025 application for Teens in Public Service (TIPS) is now open! TIPS provides paid summer internships at nonprofit organizations for high school students passionate about leadership and service. Internship placements range from museums to nature preserves, food banks, summer camps, and more!

Seattle Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) department maintains an Career Quest SPS Active directory of internships and other career-focused training programs that is updated throughout the year. The programs currently seeking students – and have open applications – are listed at the top. Programs that may not be accepting students now – but will in the future – are listed by CTE pathway below.
This is always the best place to start when looking for opportunities, but if you do not find something you like there, make an appointment with Mr. Ruiz to explore additional opportunities.
Worksite Learning (HS credit for work)
Students who are currently employed can earn high school credit (CTE or other elective credit) for completed working hours! Every 180 hours worked is equivalent to .5 high school elective credits plus an A to boost your GPA for college admissions.

Eligibility for students seeking elective credit for their paid work experience:
- Student must be 16 years of age or older, be legally employed, and have taken a CTE course.
- Complete Bi-Weekly check-in forms documenting your hours.
- Complete a final evaluation form detailing how their specific work experience aligns with their educational goals, imparts work and financial understanding, and the ways this work experience impacts future career and educational opportunities.

Washington State University will present its Visionaries Inspiring Black Empowered Students (V.I.B.E.S) Conference February 7-9, 2025 at the Pullman campus.
VIBES aims to motivate and encourage high school students to seek higher education opportunities. Sponsored by the Black Student Union of Washington State University, the conference helps students see the value of ongoing learning and the need to always reach higher and dream bigger with the endless opportunities that await them with a solid educational foundation.
Students will get an opportunity to visit WSU Pullman and understand life as a WSU Coug firsthand through a series of workshops and activities on topics like financial aid, tackling student loans, applications, deciding the right major and more.

The BE Project Promotes Black Excellence through tours of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) and workshops to help students prepare.
Tours:
The BE Project provides professional, organized, and memorable trips at an affordable price. Tour chaperones are experienced and dedicated to providing students a college preparatory experience.
There are still spots available on the East Coast tour, which will visit the following institutions In Virginia: Hampton University, Virginia State University, Norfolk State University and Virginia Union University, and in Washington D.C,: Howard University, The University of District of Columbia and Bowie State University.
The Southeast tour is currently full, and the program is pushing interested students to the East Coast tour; however they are compiling a “wait list” for student interested in just the Southeast tour. Email info@thebeprojects.com to be put on the waitlist.
Scholarships and Financial Aid
$16,000 scholarship available just for South Seattle students, apply by January 31
Applications are open for a $16,000 local scholarship that is targeted specifically towards students at Franklin. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship (a sponsored activity of the Mount Baker Community Club) grants $4K per year and is renewable for 4 years of college ($16K total) – with options for 2-year programs (or 2-year to 4-year transfer pathways) as well.
The goal of this scholarship is to help deserving students achieve the dream of a higher education. The scholarship seeks out students who show financial need and academic promise, have overcome obstacles, and who contribute to their community. The scholarship is limited to students from ethnic or racial groups that are underrepresented in higher education. Make sure if you are eligible for South Seattle Students Scholarship before you apply.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship is administered by College Success Foundation. More information can be found on College Success Foundation website. Application Deadline: January 31, 2025.

Each year, the Women’s University Club of Seattle Foundation awards $10,000 scholarships to young women of character, scholarship, and community service performed independent of their school requirements. The funds are distributed over four years and may be used for tuition, mandatory fees, books, and supplies. Successful applicants will reflect the Foundation’s values of innovative leadership, civic involvement and personal growth.
To qualify, students must submit a fillable pdf application along with their high school transcript and a recommendation letter. Learn more about their application requirements and then download an application.

Additionally, FOSSI connects students to leadership development, mentoring and internship opportunities at participating companies.

Seattle Promise (2 years Free Tuition) Application Now Open!
Seattle Promise is a college tuition and success program launched by Seattle Colleges, Seattle Public Schools, and the City of Seattle. It offers free tuition at any of the Seattle Colleges: North Seattle College, Seattle Central College or South Seattle College for up to two years, 90 college credits or a student’s first degree, whichever comes first.
All graduating seniors attending Seattle public high schools are eligible for the Seattle Promise program regardless of grade point average (GPA), income, ability, or country of birth. But you MUST APPLY to claim your free tuition. The application deadline is February 14.
Even if you are expecting to attend a 4-year university after high school, sometimes plans change, and you do not want to miss out on free tuition for 2 years. Engineering Mentor Night January 30! Open to High School Seniors
The Puget Sound Engineering Council (PSEC) together with the Math, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program at Seattle Central College (SCC) will be hosting an Engineering Mentor Night on Thursday, January 30, 2025 from 6-8pm.
Engineering Mentor Night gives students an opportunity to meet representatives from a wide spectrum of practices in the engineering profession. Learn about career pathways in engineering, day-to-day work, internships, graduate education, professional advancement and more! No ongoing mentoring is expected of those attending this event.

Project FAMILY Now Providing Mentorship Program for Filipino Students
Are you a Filipinx High School student looking for guidance in navigating college prep?
Project F.A.M.I.L.Y. (Filipino Americans Mentoring and Instilling Leadership in Youth), a subcommittee within the Filipino American Student Association at UW Seattle, are a group of college students who hope to engage with high school students in a mentorship program focusing on the interest, representation, and retention of Filipino American students at the University of Washington and other colleges.
Mentorship Program: This program gives high school students access to virtual workshop-style lessons on a variety of topics including College Readiness, Career Exploration, and Filipino History and Culture. Each mentee is connected with a College Mentor they can consult for advice, gain resources from, or simply chat with! Being a mentee unlocks unique opportunities such as networking, connecting with the Filipino community in Seattle, and developing leadership skills. Students can apply to be a mentee through this link.

The Girls Who Code 2025 Summer Programs Application is open!
GHC Summer Programs help high school girls and nonbinary students build coding skills, explore career pathways in tech, and connect with a supportive community–no program fees or prior coding experience required!
Students can choose their own adventure with two exciting program options:
Summer Immersion Program (SIP): Spend two weeks designing computer games in live virtual classrooms while making friends, getting practical college and career advice from industry leaders, and exploring a future career in tech. Eligible students can apply for a $300 SIP Student Grant plus laptop and hotspot access!
Pathways: This flexible, six-week program lets students learn at their own pace with step-by-step video tutorials. Participants explore hot topics in tech like artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and web development, with opportunities to apply new skills to real-world projects and get career insights from tech industry pros

The National Institute of Health’s Short-Term Research Experience Program to Unlock Potential (STEP-UP) is a nationally recognized summer research program that connects students with local institutions and mentors to gain firsthand research experience.
STEP-UP supports high school Juniors and Seniors from groups historically excluded from
science to spend a summer in a paid, full-time, 8-week internship at research labs near their
home. During the program, students will create and conduct their own research project, garnering essential experience before they enter college. After the program, students will have the opportunity to present their work at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD. All travel expenses will be covered by the program.

STG is now accepting applications for the 5th Annual ELEVATE: a showcase of black and brown youth voices uplifting one another through the art of spoken words. The program includes Weekly in person writing sessions starting in March, two rehearsals in June, followed by a Final Share performance on June 12, 2025

Evergreen Goodwill offers programs to ensure youth in our community have the
skills and training they need to successfully make the transition to adulthood and careers. Programs include:
Youth at Work – Year-Round Program for youth aged 16-24 interested in careers in healthcare, IT, manufacturing and transportation logistics, trades and aerospace.
Youth Maritime Program – Two-year program providing high school students with a smooth transition through their senior year toward a career in maritime. The program helps build strong soft skills and helps connect students with future career opportunities in the maritime industry.

The Seattle Police Law Enforcement Exploring program aims to bridge the gap between youth and police by educating and involving them in police operations and to interest them in Law Enforcement.
Besides gaining a working knowledge of police work, the participants have the opportunity to give of themselves to their community.
Who: Explorers is for young men and women 14 to 21 years of age with a grade point average of 2.5 or above
When: must attend 2 – 4 monthly meetings in succession.

Rainier Valley Food Bank Seeking Volunteers for Upcoming Book Fair
The Rainier Valley Food Bank is currently looking for volunteers for their third annual Book Fair (in coordination with Seattle Public Library) on Saturday, March 22 from 10am-1pm. If you are interested in volunteering to earn some service hours, please contact Hannah Wertzberger, Youth Community Coordinator, at hannah.wertzberger@rvfb.org to sign up for this opportunity.
Applications Now Open for the UW Botanical Gardens Junior Naturalist Service Program
UW Botanic Gardens Junior Naturalist applications are now open for the summer program. Junior Naturalists are teens volunteering with the Arboretum Summer Camp for a two-week session. The program is looking for individuals who are enthusiastic about working with kids, playing outside, and gaining leadership skills. Students can earn up to 75 service hours, and will receive a letter of recommendation upon successful completion of the program.
Qualified Students are:
- Age 15-18
- Able to commit to a full, 2-week session
- Willing to be outside all day

Be a Dance Buddy to a neurodiverse or disabled student in an adaptive movement camp. Volunteers will dance, move, ad play with students facilitated by a teacher. They will provide unique support to students to make sure that everyone is safe and engaged

Pedalheads, a learn-to-ride bicycle day camp for ages 2-12, is currently seeking volunteer Camp Counselors to help run their 2025 spring break program. Their camp counselor volunteer positions are wonderful opportunities to gain skills in relationship-building, teaching and leadership while earning time toward your 60-hour graduation requirement.

School Connect WA provides after school literacy and math tutoring/programming for BIPOC and McKinney Vento children in Seattle Public Schools. Locally, they partner with the Deaborn Park International School in Beacon Hill to provide reading and math tutoring to 1st-5th graders. This opportunity would be an easy commute for any Franklin students who are interested in volunteering.
