Paid Internships

Seattle Department of Transportation Internship Opportunity

Are you interested in learning more about urban planning, community advocacy, and transportation justice? Are you looking for a service-learning experience? Apply for the 3-4 month PAID internship at the Seattle Department of Transportation!

As a Safe Routes to School High School Intern, you will plan and lead a school project to help students and families walking and biking to school.

Some project examples:

• Host a bike rodeo at an elementary school
• Lead a workshop for middle schoolers on how to ride transit
• Host a bike/walk/roll event or competition at your own high school

Apply through the Seattle Youth Employment Program’s Learn & Earn Pathways Program this Fall. The program will run in the 2025-26 school year for 3-4 months starting in January. Students receive stipends and service hours based on participation.

SYEP School Year Learn & Earn Program Applications now Open

The 2025-2026 Learn and Earn: Foundations application has launched and will be open until Monday, October 15, 2025. This is an opportunity to earn a stipend while exploring careers and expanding your career portfolio.

Get paid to attend job readiness trainings while preparing for your career (up to $325 per module based on attendance).

• Receive support from a Youth Development Counselor (YDC) throughout the program to develop skills and interact in small groups with peers.
• Gain practical tools to build your career portfolio (resume, cover letter, etc.).
• Participate in a total of fifteen workshops between October 15th to March 5th.
• This is a hybrid program. In-person workshops will be in Downtown Seattle and virtual
• workshops will be held through Microsoft Teams

Eligibility Requirements:

• Age: Be between 16-24 years old at the start of the program.
• Address: Live within the Seattle city limits OR attend a Seattle Public School OR attend North Seattle, South Seattle or Seattle Central College.
• Household Income: Live in a household with income at or below 80% Area Median Income

Seattle Parks and Recreation Recruiting for their Paid Mentorship Program

Seattle Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) department maintains an Career Quest SPS Active directory of internships and other career-focused training programs that is updated throughout the year. The programs currently seeking students – and have open applications – are listed at the top. Programs that may not be accepting students now – but will in the future – are listed by CTE pathway below.

This is always the best place to start when looking for opportunities, but if you do not find something you like there, make an appointment with Mr. Ruiz to explore additional opportunities.

Worksite Learning (HS credit for work)

Students who are currently employed can earn high school credit (CTE or other elective credit) for completed working hours! Every 180 hours worked is equivalent to .5 high school elective credits plus an A to boost your GPA for college admissions.

Eligibility for students seeking elective credit for their paid work experience:

• Student must be 16 years of age or older, be legally employed, and have taken a CTE course.
• Complete Bi-Weekly check-in forms documenting your hours.
• Complete a final evaluation form detailing how their specific work experience aligns with their educational goals, imparts work and financial understanding, and the ways this work experience impacts future career and educational opportunities.

College Visit Registration Instructions

If you are interested in learning more about these schools, you will need to register to attend the College Visit session at least 24 hours in advance. Follow the directions at the link to register through Naviance. You can also register using the sign-up sheets on the table outside of the College and Career Center (Room 205a). A pass will be sent to your teacher for that period so that you can check in with them about missed work before reporting to the session.

College Application Help

Seniors, college application help continues on Thursdays at lunchtime throughout the application season. Counselors will be in the Library during both lunches to support with Common App, Seattle Promise, personal statements, scholarships, and financial aid. Drop-in at any time during your lunch, no appointment necessary.

UW Connections Provides College Prep Support Opportunities

Since 1998, UW Making Connections has provided life-changing, wrap-around academic enrichment services to low income, first generation, and underrepresented students and their families. The program combines the nuts and bolts of college readiness preparation with four years of career exploration, academic tutoring, personal and professional mentorship, leadership development, ongoing professional enrichment, and a lifelong network of allies comprised of MC alumnae and supporters.

The program is currently recruiting incoming 9^th and 10^th graders who would benefit from this program. They have no GPA requirement, but there is an application with a Priority Deadline of October 10.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Seattle Promise (2 years Free Tuition) Application Now Open!

Seattle Promise is a college tuition and success program launched by Seattle Colleges, Seattle Public Schools, and the City of Seattle. It offers free tuition at any of the Seattle Colleges: North Seattle College, Seattle Central College or South Seattle College for up to two years, 90 college credits or a student’s first degree, whichever comes first.

All graduating seniors attending Seattle public high schools are eligible for the Seattle Promise program regardless of grade point average (GPA), income, ability, or country of birth. But you MUST APPLY to claim your free tuition. The application deadline is February 13.

Even if you are expecting to attend a 4-year university after high school, sometimes plans change, and you do not want to miss out on free tuition for 2 years. You cannot apply to Seattle Promise after February 16, so do it now even if it is a backup plan. Find out more information about the Seattle Promise and Apply for Seattle Promise NOW!

Training and Mentorship Programs

Washington Aerospace Scholars Holding Info Session October 15

Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) is calling all high school juniors (grade 11) to join the upcoming WAS virtual Info Night to meet the team, ask questions, and learn more about the WAS program for the 2025-26 year!

WAS is a two-part program for high school juniors focused on the history and future exploration of space by NASA and topics in earth and space science, aeronautics and astronautics.

Phase One: Online distance learning course provided at-no-cost and designed in partnership with NASA and the University of Washington, which provides students the opportunity to earn five UW college credits.
Phase Two: A week-long residency experience where students work with STEM professionals, NASA scientists, university students, and STEM educators. Financial assistance is available.

Code Day November 10 is a chance to explore a computer science future

CodeDay is a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring students through coding and creativity. Over the past four years, hundreds of students—including 600+ low-income students—have attended CodeDay Seattle, with 70% continuing to code after the event and many pursuing computer science.

CodeDay is hosting an upcoming event on November 1st at North Seattle College from 9am-9pm. This is a beginner-friendly, 12-hour event where students can learn to build apps and games from industry mentors, with a focus on creativity. To ensure accessibility, registration is FREE and includes meals, drinks, and snacks. Additionally, they provide laptops to keep for students without one, and free Uber transportation for any student that needs it!

Readyworks Job Training Program Recruiting for Winter job readiness classes

ReadyWork$ Youth is a free job-readiness training that helps participants build confidence and develop the skills needed to obtain employment and succeed.

This free program is designed for youth ages 16+ who are looking to begin their career exploration, as well as those seeking internships, apprenticeships, or part-time/full-time employment. The curriculum includes key topics such as professional presence, effective resume writing, and interview practice, as well as the soft skills needed to land and keep a job.

Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00-7:15pm during the months of January and February at the New Holly Gathering Hall: 7054 32nd Ave S. Seattle, WA 98118

At the end of the program, participants may will received priority interview or hiring from partner employers for a long-term part-time entry level position on Feb 19th on site at the New Holly Gathering Hall. 

Thriving Elements Seeking STEM-focused students for Mentorship Opportunity

Thriving Elements is a high quality mentoring program whose mission is to create access and opportunities for students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Upon selection into the program, you are matched with a STEM professional who will help prepare you for college and a professional career in STEM. Once you become a member of the TE (Thriving Elements) community, you can expect quarterly leadership events where mentors and mentees from all locations get together to participate in mentoring and teambuilding activities. The vision is to develop and empower leaders in STEM to make a sustainable impact in their communities and inspire the next generation. If this resonates with you, we highly encourage you to apply.

The recruitment process consists of 4 steps: application, interview, speed networking, and mentee-mentor matching.

Brightspark Brothers and Sisters Program

Brothers & Sisters is a 9-week program that teaches teens how to care for themselves and younger children in their family. They focus on teaching life skills, developing leadership skills, first-aid (they will get CPR certified), and will finish with a resume workshop. The program starts the 2nd to last week of October and will happen after school hours. It’s open to all participants ages 14+.

Service-Learning Opportunities

Local snowboarding program offers leadership service opportunity

Service Learning Credit available – This organization will be at Franklin tabling outside of the Commons on Thursday, September 25. Stop by to learn more and to sign up to be part of the Core Program.

Interested in getting service-learning credit while also learning how to snowboard and going on fun outings in the snow? the Service Board brings together a group of high school students and adult mentors from a diverse range of academic, racial, cultural and economic backgrounds to engage in their Core Program. Program participants meet twice weekly from beginning of winter through spring. Weekday workshops focus on engaging discussions encompassing a broad range of social justice topics. Weekend activities during Core Program – The Service Board rotate between intensive service-learning projects and snowboarding outings.

This year’s Core Program will be four months long, beginning in late January and ending in mid-May, meeting on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Music, snowballs, fresh food and a sense of community are the common threads that tie the Core Program together. tSB emphasizes the importance of youth voice, supportive community and promoting positive risk-taking to build youth leadership skills.

Interim CDA still recruiting for service-based leadership program

Earn up to 30 service hours by growing leadership skills, connecting with the community, and taking cooking and gardening classes in Interim CDA’s Fall Program, WILD (Wilderness Inner-City Leadership).

WILD fosters confident, informed, compassionate, civically-engaged refugee and immigrant youth leaders. They primarily serve approximately 100 low-income Asian and Pacific Islanders ages 14-18 each year, through their award winning, year-round environmental justice leadership development program. Participate in an All-Day Youth Conference for Service Hours

The Consejo Youth Conference is an annual event that unites students in grades 6–12 across King, Pierce, Snohomish, Thurston, Mason, and Skagit Counties. Each year, the conference focuses on timely and pressing issues impacting youth, creating an educational and therapeutic space where young people can:

• Explore challenges around mental health, substance use, community and gun violence, and peer pressure
• Build skills and positive outlets through interactive workshops such as yoga, healthy relationships, coping strategies, and more
• Hear from inspiring keynote speakers who bring messages of resilience, empowerment, and leadership
• Connect with local resources, mentors, and youth-serving organizations at our resource fair

This year’s theme, Balance: Navigating Wellness & Awareness, encourages students to reflect on how to care for their mental, emotional, and physical health while staying informed and engaged in the issues affecting their communities.
