Paid Internships
Take advance of this PAID Digital Arts Internship for BIPOC Youth
The Youth in Focus Creative Career Cohort application has opened for 2025! They are recruiting BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) youth ages 15-19 (sophomores – seniors) for a 17-week-long program in the YIF Seattle office. During this time, students will be provided arts education, technical photography skills, work on real commercial projects, a supportive community, and earn a $1,400 stipend for participating!
This course provides a well-rounded exploration of photography, videography, graphic design, and creative direction. The aim is not mastery or proficiency but rather to expose youth to the professional tools of the trade and best prepare them for success in education, life, and career!
If you are serious about this opportunity, set aside 20-30 minutes to give thoughtful answers to the application since this program is competitive.

Timeline:
- Accepting applications until Sunday, November 30th
- 20 students chosen to interview between December 4th – 13th

Join Youth Grantmakers Making Decisions about Programs in Schools and Community, Deadline December 9
Are you looking for a paid opportunity to develop your leadership skills and help make decisions about programming in your school and community? Then join the Youth Grantmakers!
The Details:
- Work together to create and award grants for your school
- Build your resume and get networking opportunities
- Get paid $25/hour
- Transportation assistance provided
- Internship runs January – May 2025
- The sessions will be held at the offices of SESEC at El Centro De La Raza (2524 16th Ave South, Ste #306 Seattle, WA 98144).
- 10 sessions, occurring approximately every other week
Who qualifies:
- 9th-12th graders from Southeast Seattle high schools (this includes Franklin)
- Passion for racial and social justice

Teens in Public Service Seeking Interns interested in Leadership and Service
The 2025 application for Teens in Public Service (TIPS) is now open! TIPS provides paid summer internships at nonprofit organizations for high school students passionate about leadership and service. Internship placements range from museums to nature preserves, food banks, summer camps, and more!
TIPS interns gain…
- A summer’s worth of impactful work experience
- Exposure to the “behind the scenes” of nonprofit orgs carrying out community-centered work
- Mentorship, networking opportunity, and support from TIPS and their nonprofit supervisors / coworkers
- A paycheck – interns will be paid Seattle minimum wage, which will be $20.76 in 2025

Youth Maritime Career Launch Program Recruiting for Summer and Fall 2025
The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle and Port of Seattle are now recruiting for Summer and Fall 2025 cohorts for a paid internship opportunity in the maritime industry, a sector in the Pacific Northwest with tremendous growth and living-wage career opportunities. This program is specifically designed to support graduating seniors interested in alternatives to traditional college, who are drawn to hands-on technical work, and interested in environmental/marine industries.
Key Benefits:
- Starting wage of $21.09/hour
- Bi-weekly stipend
- $1,000 in wrap-around services (in addition to pay)
- Direct pathway to permanent employment
- 1-week training + 3-month paid internship
Program Eligibility:
- Ages 18-24
- Ability to legally work in the US
- Able to pass drug test
- Can obtain State ID

Seattle Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) department maintains an Career Quest SPS Active directory of internships and other career-focused training programs that is updated throughout the year. The programs currently seeking students – and have open applications – are listed at the top. Programs that may not be accepting students now – but will in the future – are listed by CTE pathway below.
This is always the best place to start when looking for opportunities, but if you do not find something you like there, make an appointment with Mr. Ruiz to explore additional opportunities.
Worksite Learning (HS credit for work)
Students who are currently employed can earn high school credit (CTE or other elective credit) for completed working hours! Every 180 hours worked is equivalent to .5 high school elective credits plus an A to boost your GPA for college admissions.

Eligibility for students seeking elective credit for their paid work experience:
- Student must be 16 years of age or older, be legally employed, and have taken a CTE course.
- Complete Bi-Weekly check-in forms documenting your hours.
- Complete a final evaluation form detailing how their specific work experience aligns with their educational goals, imparts work and financial understanding, and the ways this work experience impacts future career and educational opportunities.

The BE Project Promotes Black Excellence through tours of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) and workshops to help students prepare.

Tours:
The BE Project provides professional, organized, and memorable trips at an affordable price. Tour chaperones are experienced and dedicated to providing students a college preparatory experience.
There are still spots available on the East Coast tour, which will visit the following institutions In Virginia: Hampton University, Virginia State University, Norfolk State University and Virginia Union University, and in Washington D.C,: Howard University, The University of District of Columbia and Bowie State University.
The Southeast tour is currently full, and the program is pushing interested students to the East Coast tour; however they are compiling a “wait list” for student interested in just the Southeast tour. Email info@thebeprojects.com to be put on the waitlist.
Scholarships and Financial Aid
Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship Now Open until December 19
The Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship is now open until Dec. 19! So much more than a scholarship, every year the Amazon Future Engineer program awards 400 students up to $40,000 each toward college expenses, paired with opportunities to intern at Amazon. This scholarship program is open to current high school seniors planning to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or other computer science related field of study and are planning to attend an accredited 4-year college or university in the United States (or an accredited 2-year college, with the intent to transfer to a 4-year institution).
If you want to learn more, consider attending information nights at Garfield High School on Thursday, Nov. 14, or at the University of Washington Ethnic Cultural Center on Thursday, Dec. 13. Both events are from 5 to 8 p.m.
$16,000 scholarship available just for South Seattle students, apply by January 31
Applications are open for a $16,000 local scholarship that is targeted specifically towards students at Franklin. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship (a sponsored activity of the Mount Baker Community Club) grants $4K per year and is renewable for 4 years of college ($16K total) – with options for 2-year programs (or 2-year to 4-year transfer pathways) as well.
The goal of this scholarship is to help deserving students achieve the dream of a higher education. The scholarship seeks out students who show financial need and academic promise, have overcome obstacles, and who contribute to their community. The scholarship is limited to students from ethnic or racial groups that are underrepresented in higher education. Make sure if you are eligible for South Seattle Students Scholarship before you apply.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship is administered by College Success Foundation. More information can be found on College Success Foundation website. Application Deadline: January 31, 2025.
Seattle Promise (2 years Free Tuition) Application Now Open!
Seattle Promise is a college tuition and success program launched by Seattle Colleges, Seattle Public Schools, and the City of Seattle. It offers free tuition at any of the Seattle Colleges: North Seattle College, Seattle Central College or South Seattle College for up to two years, 90 college credits or a student’s first degree, whichever comes first.
All graduating seniors attending Seattle public high schools are eligible for the Seattle Promise program regardless of grade point average (GPA), income, ability, or country of birth. But you MUST APPLY to claim your free tuition. The application deadline is February 14.
Even if you are expecting to attend a 4-year university after high school, sometimes plans change, and you do not want to miss out on free tuition for 2 years. You cannot apply to Seattle Promise after February 16, so do it now even if it is a backup plan. Find out more information about the Seattle Promise and Apply for Seattle Promise NOW!

In these workshops, Seattle Promise staff will assist students in completing the initial steps of the scholarship process. They will demonstrate how to apply for the Seattle Promise as well as how to complete the application for Seattle Colleges. They will also explain the subsequent steps necessary to finalize the scholarship and answer any questions students may have.

If you want to learn more about unique job opportunities and the education required to enter the fields listed below, sign up to attend one of the upcoming Career Days. Invited guests will present on their careers and the companies they work for, share their own educational pathway to that career, and demonstrate some of the essential skills you will need to succeed in any job in their field.
- Business Career Day, Wednesday Dec 4 – featuring professionals from real estate and hospitality management
- Computer Science / IT Career Day, Wednesday, Dec 11 – featuring engineers and developers from some of the biggest companies in the tech industry
- Law and Public Service Career Day, Wednesday, Dec 18 – highlighting jobs in legal services and social justice work

Washington World Fellow Leadership Program Accepting Applications
The Washington World Fellowship is a global leadership program that seeks to cultivate global leadership and future success in young Washingtonians by providing access to unique academic, travel, and leadership opportunities. The program is open to high school sophomores and is administered at no cost to students and their families. Almost every Washington World Fellow plans to be the first in their family to attend college.
If selected, students will receive a 2.5 year global leadership development and college readiness program, plus an all-expenses paid study abroad experience in Spain. Because the program is administered by Washington State, students also have opportunities to connect with state lawmakers and other leaders in areas of their interest and engage in legislative advocacy in Olympia. This can be a great networking/career-building opportunity for students interested in activism, community advocacy, or public service.

Service Learning Opportunities
Deadline fast approaching for Service Board Snowboarding Program
Interested in getting service-learning credit while also learning how to snowboard and going on fun outings in the snow? the Service Board Snowboarding Program brings together a group of high school students and adult mentors from a diverse range of academic, racial, cultural and economic backgrounds to engage in their Core Program. Program participants meet twice weekly from beginning of winter through spring. Weekday workshops focus on engaging discussions encompassing a broad range of social justice topics. Weekend activities during Core Program – The Service Board rotate between intensive service-learning projects and snowboarding outings.
This year’s Core Program will be four months long, beginning in late January and ending in mid-May, meeting on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Music, snowballs, fresh food and a sense of community are the common threads that tie the Core Program together. TSB emphasizes the importance of youth voice, supportive community and promoting positive risk-taking to build youth leadership skills.
