Team Read now accepting Fall 2025 Applications

Are you are interested in earning some extra money during the school year taking a few hours out of your week to help elementary school students learn to read? Team Read is an afterschool program that offers families free 1:1 reading tutoring for their student 2 days a week from November to May. The teens hired are paired with these 2nd – 4th grade students, earn $20.76/hr for their time, and are supervised by an adult site coordinator – normally a staff member of the elementary school.

The Rainier Beach Youth Stewards program is currently accepting applications for the 2025 Fall season. The summer applications are now closed! RBYS is a youth employment program of Tilth Alliance for youth, ages 14-18, to gain job experience through wetland restoration, farm education, and community engagement. 

Participants will work at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands and support with field maintenance, food distribution, and wetland restoration. Youth will participate in workshops that explore food access, civic engagement, and responsible land stewardship while building relationships with peers, adult staff, and volunteers. See their seasonal schedule below.  

Fall September 16 – November 22.  6 hrs/week for 10 weeks.  Every Wednesday: 3:15pm – 5:15pm and Saturday: 10:00am – 3:00pm

Qualifications: To be considered, applicants must be 14-18 years old and must submit a complete application.  Applicants are encouraged to apply for multiple seasons 

Pay: Youth will be paid $20.76/hr and will receive checks bi-weekly.

The programs currently seeking students – and have open applications – are listed at the top. Programs that may not be accepting students now – but will in the future – are listed by CTE pathway below.

This is always the best place to start when looking for opportunities, but if you do not find something you like there, make an appointment with Mr. Ruiz to explore additional opportunities.


College Preparation

College Possible Still Recruiting for the 2025-26 School Year

Does your student want to go to college? Do you wish they could have a college coach to increase their chances of completing their degree? College Possible can give them that! 

College Possible is accepting applications from current sophomores! All students applying now would start to receive direct support starting in the fall.

College Possible provides 1:1 college coaching to students from lower-income backgrounds beginning junior year of high school through college graduation, regardless of which college a student chooses. In order to be a part of this program, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Minimum GPA of 2.0
  2. Qualifies for College Bound, qualifies for free and reduced lunch or meets minimum Pell eligibility
  3. Committed to pursuing a college degree

To be considered for the College Possible Program, students can APPLY HERE. After they apply, parents/guardians will be emailed a family form to complete. We process applications as they come in so encourage your student to apply as soon as possible to guarantee a spot in our program.

Training and Mentorship Programs

GoKic (Geeking Out Kids of Color) offering a six-week summer program

GoKic’s Collective Youth is an incredible program empowering high school and college-aged youth in underserved Communities of Color! It is a six-week program offered July to August on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with field trips included. Students also earn a $300 award at the end of the Summer for their participation.

They’re not just learning Python coding, they’re building their own supportive community! Imagine the impact when tech meets unity! Fill out the Interest Form now to learn more.

Representatives from the program will also be here at Franklin in the lobby on Monday, June 16 during both lunches to sign up students on the spot.

Skills Center Summer School Accepting Applications for CTE Credit Courses

If you are looking for something fun and hands-on to do during the Month of July, while also earning .5 CTE credit, taking a Skills Center CTE class might be the way to go. All classes are introductory and require no prior experience, and many are offered here at Franklin this summer. This is also a great opportunity to take courses like Intro to Broadcast Media, Engineering, Video Game Animation, and Manufacturing; that are not offered at Franklin during the school year. Classes begin July 7 and most will continue through the 31st, giving you the entire month of August to rest before the new school year starts so Apply Now!

Urban League Summer University @ Garfield High Now Accepting Applications, $600 award for completing program

Looking for something to get you out of the house this summer while also collecting $600? Would you like to study career preparation courses like software coding, entrepreneurship, cosmetology, culinary arts, business competition, and community leadership? Join the Urban League at Garfield High School for their Summer University. Summer U is a free six-week program from July through August for rising 9th – 12th graders in the Metropolitan Seattle area.  The program is designed to keep high school students engaged and learning during the summer months to prevent summer learning loss. Programming is led by the Urban League’s Education Department staff and certificated teachers.

Young Women Empowered’s FREE Summer Camps begin on June 24th. Y-WE summer camps provide transformative experiences for young women and trans, non-binary, and gender-expansive youth ages 13-19. 

This year’s Summer Camps include:

  • BIPOC Horse Camp: an overnight camp June 24th – 25th in collaboration with the Buffalo Soldiers of Seattle at Red Barn Ranch in Auburn, Washington.
  • Black Girls Bike: From June 29 – July 3rd program participants will get to learn the rules of the road, basic bike safety, how to fix a flat tire, how to safely ride around Seattle and more.
  • Create Camp: a two-week day camp from July 14th – 25th designed for self-expression and artistic exploration!
  • Black Mermaids: From July 28th – August 1st Chandrika Frances of the Oshun Swim School will curate this five-day exploration of Blackness and water.
  • Grow Overnight Camp: August 13th – 15th at Ayeko Farm in Enumclaw, WA, where young people will explore a working farm and connect with nature firsthand.
  • Grow Internship: Dig deep into farming, food justice, and community from July 9th – August 15th (Wed-Fri each week) at Marra Farm in South Park, Seattle! Young people will build leadership skills, confidence, and time management while working alongside peers and mentors.
  • Write Camp: Write Camp is the perfect place to explore new genres, grow as a writer, and find your voice in a supportive, creative space. Held August 11th – 17th at the Seattle Public Library’s Downtown location, it’s the ultimate space to fuel creativity and connect with other young writers.

Students interests in careers in health and community development careers, are encouraged to participate in the King County Public Health Camp this summer. The camp features field trips, career path explorations, and hands-on learning opportunities from public health professionals, including nurses, research scientists, health educators and more.

Details:

  • Open to all young people age 16 and older
  • August 4-8, 2025. 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM (day camp, no overnights)
  • Lunch and snacks provided each day

The Seattle Police Law Enforcement Exploring program aims to bridge the gap between youth and police by educating and involving them in police operations and to interest them in Law Enforcement.

Besides gaining a working knowledge of police work, the participants have the opportunity to give of themselves to their community.

Who: Explorers is for young men and women 14 to 21 years of age with a grade point average of 2.5 or above

When: must attend 2 – 4 monthly meetings in succession.

Cost: Free

Service-Learning Opportunities

Interim CDA Recruiting for their WILD summer service program, will be on campus June 10

Interim CDA will once again offer their  Wilderness Inner-City Leadership Development Program (WILD) this Summer, and this is a great opportunity for students to develop leadership skills and immerse themselves in leadership work while also gaining service learning credit. The program will run Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am – 3pm, August 5th – 28th, 2025

Summer WILD youth interns will participate in volunteer activities based in Environmental Justice, Community Gardening, Outdoor Recreation and Inter-generational Learning. A $300 stipend offered at the end of the summer. All 60 service-learning hours can be earned.

Students can sign up now using the application form or meet with representatives here at Franklin during both lunches on Monday, June 10 in the lobby to learn more and sign up in person.

Healthy Relationships Leadership Camp Offers Service and Community Leadership Opportunity

New Beginnings is providing a no-cost series of trainings for aspiring peer educators, activists and leaders ages 15-18 through its 4th annual Youth Leadership Camp. This training program can be used as service hours toward the 60 needed to graduate. The Youth Leadership Camp will support leadership development through workshops centered around relationships, anti-violence, advocacy, and more. You’ll meet other local teens who share similar values. Together, you’ll learn and practice peer education skills to engage your own community.

  • Strengthen healthy relationship skills around asking for consent, respecting boundaries, and accountability for actions.

Seattle Universal Math Museum Seeking Volunteers to Promote Museum at Markets

Do you have a passion for math or education? Spend your Summer talking to kids and playing math games for service learning hours! Seattle Universal Math Museum (SUMM), a non-profit dedicated to providing informal math education to communities of opportunity around the Greater Seattle Area, is currently looking for high school-age volunteers to join them at farmers’ markets, museums and community centers this summer to help them promote their programs in really fun ways. The Office of Congressman Adam Smith is now accepting applications for the 2025-2026 cohort of his Youth Advisory Council. The Youth Advisory Council gives community-minded and civically engaged students an opportunity to discuss critical issues with Rep. Smith and staff. Participants will meet in-person once per month in their Kent office throughout the 2025-26 school year. This is not only a great opportunity for service-learning but also an excellent resume builder for students interested in law and public service careers.

All current high school and college students living in Washington’s Ninth Congressional District (this is all of South Seattle) are eligible to serve on the Youth Advisory Council. Applications will be accepted through June 16, 2025. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for the weeks of July 14th and July 21st, 2025 via Zoom.

The Jefferson Community Center at Jefferson Park in Beacon Hill is a great nearby location to pick up service-learning hours throughout the year by becoming one of their regular volunteers.

This community center offers volunteer opportunities to: help the environment by picking up trash and maintaining the park space; helping out at events like Jefferson Jumpstart and Beacon Arts Street Fair and making posters for their events; and assisting with their education and recreation programming like cooking classes, kayaking, golfing, sewing club, and STEM workshops. Students can earn up to 100 hours over a single summer because of the amount of programming they have happening each week. Volunteers are also able to participate in the center’s many activities for free.
