Applications Still Open to be a Team Read Tutor

Team Read’s 2026–27 school year Reading Coach application is still open, but only for a couple more weeks, so don’t delay! Team Read Coaches are Seattle area teens who are trained to tutor elementary students in reading after school. A group of coaches go to nearby elementary schools to work one-on-one with 2nd & 3rd graders to help them become better readers and develop confidence in their skills. The pay rate is $21.30/hr.

20+ students from Franklin were employed with Team Read last year and made a real difference for elementary readers across South Seattle. 

The Commitment:

• Two days a week from approximately ~4:15-5:45 p.m.
• Training occurs in the month of October
• Work with a group of peer coaches in-person at a nearby SPS elementary school or community site

Earn $300 Stipend for Work With Sawhorse Revolution

Sawhorse Revolution is hiring students age 13-19 years old and paying $300 stipends in four different amazing hand-on design construction programs! Work alongside architects, designers, builders, folks in the trades, and so much more!

Food, transportation and all materials are all FREE. In addition, students who complete the entire program will receive their choice of the cash award and/or community service hours. This is a great way to network with industry professionals and build up your resume for future job opportunities.

Paid Internships

SYEP Learn and Earn Program Applications Close September 25

Seattle Youth Employment Program (SYEP) Foundations provides job readiness training and career planning workshops for young people ages 16-24 who are new to the workforce. Participants will meet weekly for 2-hour sessions from October 2026 to March 2027 and can earn stipends, up to $325 per quarter if fully attending, with a potential total of $975 earned for the school year.

Participants will develop key industry soft skills to help them be competitive candidates for future job opportunities.

Paid Barista Training with FareStart

Become a Barista with FareStart! It’s tough for teens to get barista jobs without training or experience. In this program you will get free virtual, weekly training on how to become a barista and work in customer service, all while helping you get your first barista job! Students ages 15 to 21 join a weekly online class from 2:30-4:30 p.m. for 6 weeks of job readiness and customer service training. You’ll receive:

• A laptop to participate which they can keep after graduation
• Skills to get jobs & references
• Free food worker card
• A small weekly stipend ($) for your continued participation

Seattle Public Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) department maintains an Career Quest SPS Active directory of internships and other career-focused training programs that is updated throughout the year. The programs currently seeking students – and have open applications – are listed at the top. Programs that may not be accepting students now – but will in the future – are included by CTE pathway below the active listings.

This is always the best place to start when looking for opportunities, but if you do not find something you like there, make an appointment with Mr. Ruiz to explore additional opportunities.

Worksite Learning (HS credit for work)

Students who are currently employed can earn high school credit (CTE or other elective credit) for completed working hours! Every 180 hours worked is equivalent to .5 high school elective credits plus an A to boost your GPA for college admissions.

Eligibility for students seeking elective credit for their paid work experience:

• Student must be 16 years of age or older, be legally employed, and have taken a CTE course.
• Complete Bi-Weekly check-in forms documenting your hours.
• Complete a final evaluation form detailing how their specific work experience aligns with their educational goals, imparts work and financial understanding, and the ways this work experience impacts future career and educational opportunities.

College Prep, Fairs, and Info Sessions

UW Connections Provides College Prep Support Opportunities

Since 1998, UW Making Connections has provided life-changing, wrap-around academic enrichment services to low income, first generation, and underrepresented students and their families. The program combines the nuts and bolts of college readiness preparation with four years of career exploration, academic tutoring, personal and professional mentorship, leadership development, ongoing professional enrichment, and a lifelong network of allies comprised of MC alumnae and supporters.

The program is currently recruiting incoming 9th and 10th graders who would benefit from this program. They have no GPA requirement, but there is an application.

Interested in learning more about Historically Black Colleges and Universities or HBCU’s? Plan to attend the Black College Expo on November 14th at Highline College in Burien from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Seattle Promise (2 years Free Tuition) Application Now Open!

Seattle Promise is a college tuition and success program launched by Seattle Colleges, Seattle Public Schools, and the City of Seattle. It offers free tuition at any of the Seattle Colleges: North Seattle College, Seattle Central College or South Seattle College for up to two years, 90 college credits or a student’s first degree, whichever comes first.

All graduating seniors attending Seattle public high schools are eligible for the Seattle Promise program regardless of grade point average (GPA), income, ability, or country of birth. But you MUST APPLY to claim your free tuition. The application deadline is February 12, 2027.

Even if you are expecting to attend a 4-year university after high school, sometimes plans change, and you do not want to miss out on free tuition for 2 years. You cannot apply to Seattle Promise after February 12, so do it now even if it is a backup plan. Find out more information about the Seattle Promise and Apply for Seattle Promise NOW!

Training and Mentorship Programs

Learn a new Language with OneWorld Now this Fall

OneWorld Now is currently accepting applications for their After School Program! Students can earn foreign language credit while learning Arabic, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, or Russian.

The 2026-2027 after school program will take place from October 19, 2026 – June 11, 2027 and is open to students in grades 8-12. It will be held in Seattle’s Chinatown International District.

There are 3 program tracks, and scholarships are available.

Register Now by October 4 to secure your spot.

ACE Mentor Program Seeking Students Interested in Architecture and Construction (applications due October 10).

Who:  Any student in 9-12 grade is eligible for the program

What: ACE is a free after-school program where teams of students are paired with teams of professionals in architecture, construction, and building engineering to learn about career opportunities by designing a hands-on project together over the course of 15 sessions.

Where: Meetings are held in the offices of mentors in Seattle, Tacoma, or along the Eastside corridor. ACE is offering 8 teams in Seattle, 4 on the Eastside, 2 in Tacoma, and one fully virtual team.

When:  The deadline for student registration is October 9th. The 15 program sessions run every other week from November until May.

If you are new to ACE, you will first need to create a new login.

University of Washington’s Women in Informatics Offering Weeklong Online Hackathon

Are equity and social justice important to you? Do you have a passion for data, designing solutions, and collaborating with others? Are you planning to apply to the University of Washington? If so, FearLess Tech More is the event for you!

Event Details: FearLess Tech More invites students aged 13-18 to dive into User Experience (UX) design and technology with a focus on equity and social justice. Whether you’re a beginner or have some tech experience, this hackathon is crafted to be engaging and accessible for everyone. This is a week-long online hackathon taking place October 12-16, 2026.

What to Expect:

• Engage in fun, thought-provoking challenges throughout the week.
• Explore the field of Informatics, one of the fastest-growing majors at UW.
• No prior experience in coding or design is required—mentors from UW will guide and support your journey.
• Lots of Amazon prizes for those who participate

Service-Learning Opportunities

Seattle Public Library Offering Teen Service Learning

Seattle Public Library is recruiting teen participants for three service-learning opportunities this fall: at Beacon Hill Branch, at the Columbia Branch, and at the Rainier Beach Branch.  

Nourishing Minds Teen Service Learning at Columbia Branch and Rainier Beach Branch

SPL will be hosting Nourishing Minds, a mental health skill development program series. Through art, games, and group discussion, we’ll explore ways to stay grounded, understand and manage emotions, and strengthen our coping skills. No prior experience is needed—just bring your creativity and enthusiasm! For teens in 9th-12th grade.

Teen Service Learning at Beacon Hill Branch

Ever seen a book or poster display that inspired you to make your own? Is there a program that you wish the library offered? Do you think there is a service missing from the library that would really benefit your community? Service learning is a chance to transform those ideas into a reality! You’ll be working with other high school students to brainstorm, plan, and develop a project of your choice for the Beacon Hill library. You do not need to have any ideas yet. The most important thing is that you are open to collaboration with your peers.

Immaculate Conception Church Seeking Volunteers for Paint Party

Immaculate Conception is hosting a Community Paint Party on Saturday, September 26 and Saturday, October 3, from 9:00 AM–3:00 PM to help refresh and beautify the lower exterior of their historic church.

No painting experience is required, and all supplies, direction, and lunch will be provided. Students may volunteer on one or both Saturdays and can participate for the full day or a portion of the scheduled time. Community service-hour verification will be provided upon request.

Service Board Accepting Applications again for their Core Program

Interested in getting service-learning credit while also learning how to snowboard and going on fun outings in the snow? the Service Board brings together groups of high school students and adult mentors from a diverse range of academic, racial, cultural and economic backgrounds to engage in their Core Program.

The Service Board’s Winter Programs are 5-7 weeks long and feature:

• Youth-led service projects with environmental partners
• Youth from different schools, neighborhoods and backgrounds
• 2-3 day outdoor retreats
• Weekly community workshops and tailored counseling or mentorship
• Progressive, 4-5 week mountain-skills curriculum to increase culturally-aligned access to adventure, joyful movement, and safe outdoor spaces

Teen Tix Seeking Volunteers for Social Media promotion

TeenTix, a Seattle-based nonprofit focused on arts access and youth empowerment, is looking for volunteers to help showcase TeenTix on social media! Students can earn service learning hours by creating short-form videos that document their experience using a TeenTix pass at various local arts events. This is a great opportunity for students interested in marketing, communications, digital media, or the arts!
